Can anyone suggest a good overnight camping area that is about half way between LA and June Lake?

Hi Dale

Lone pine is a good place to stop.
Tuttle Creek Camp http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/bishop/camping/tuttle.html Or boondocking the Alabama Hills BLM area, west of Lone Pine.

Watch the weather reports, this is the time of year when it can start getting cold and wet.

This would be for next sept. This year I found that I don't enjoy driving 7-8 hours anymore and I need to find a way to break it up into two days. We enjoy staying at Silver Lake for the two weeks following Labor Day.

Lone Pine Taboose Creek it's basic but nice. I like the open view, it's only 5.00. If you want hook ups there's a nice RV Park on the south edge of town, It's called Boulder Creek Resort.

Trouble with that time of year is heat - not late enough for the fall cooldown. I recommend you go a bit further and higher beyond Bishop to the Tom's Place turnoff and French Camp. This USFS campground has no hookups, but is pleasant and has easy access from Rock Creek Road. Else, stay at Boulder Creek c.g. in Lone Pine, for the hookups.

We just drove 395 from Tahoe to 58. During our overnight stay in Bridgeport we were treated with a beautiful view of snow-covered mountains in the morning. A very enjoyable drive that day.  We even passed a blue/white Lazy Daze downtown Bishop. A very recommendable drive.       Mary and Aad Rommelse

A very recommendable drive.

--- 395 from north of Topaz (near the NV border) through Lone Pine is one of California's best roads for condition, "scenics", camping opportunities off its many side roads, and interesting towns and attractions. But, please don't tell anybody! ;-)

The Automobile Club of Southern California publishes an excellent map/guide called "A Guide to the Eastern Sierra"; it's available at SoCal AAA offices and also in offices of northern California's (NorCal, NV, UT) district of AAA; I don't know about the guide's availability in other states.
