For those of you with Progressive insurance . . .
Yahoo Message Number: 147647
Hi!  We are picking up our new LD next week so am getting insurance quotes.  Progressive seems to be a popular choice with rv-ers.  Hope some of you with Progressive won't mind sharing your experiences.  If so, how long have you been with them and are you pleased with the service, especially when making and resolving a claim?

Btw, I did a search but it keeps freezing up on me.  I'm on a new macbook so doubt it's on my end.

Thx, Diana

We've been with Progressive since 2007 and have been happy with them. The one small claim we had was handled without a problem.

I got a great rate here in pricey Southern California from AAA. About $320/year (not fulltimers). Have had to file a claim (on my regular cars, not the RV) and they're as good as it gets. I also have my two cars and our house on the policy so that helps with the rate.

Thanks, Linda!  I am getting a quote from them.  Btw, do you have the full glass coverage?  Do you think it's necessary?

Also, we have had State Farm for more than 40 years but they only offer cash value replacement.  Since the LD is new, we thought it might be best to get coverage for agreed value or total loss/purchase price agreement.

Thank you, Gil.  I will check with them, as well.  We are in So. Cal, too.  Pinon Hills, just north of Wrightwood.

Thanks, Bill!  Maybe I should check and see what they offer if we have our cars and house with them, too.

Btw, do you use their roadside assistance or do you use coachnet or good sam?

On the other side of a Progressive claim . . .

On June 17th, someone backed out of a parking place and into me in the parking lot of a nursing home.  It was well over a month before a claims adjuster even looked at the damage to my beloved car, despite their constant assertions that someone would contact me within 24 hours of the accident.  They also kept sidestepping around saying that there was some question about whose fault it was.  Since it was unlikely that I had skidded sideways into his back bumper in a parking lot, I construed this as delaying tactics.

Since the damage did not stop me from driving the car, and I had plenty of other things on my plate, I didn't spend any time trying to rush things through.

Additionally, even though they said I could just get it fixed and they would pay the bill, and they would arrange for a rental car (neither thing has yet to be done because I haven't done them), a couple of days ago I received a check for the amount they estimate it will cost to fix it.  I presume if I sign and cash it, they will wash their hands of me.  Of course this precludes any expense for a rental car.  I won't need one because we have another vehicle, but they don't know that.

Obviously, I don't know what the policy holder was told, but that's how it looks from this side of the claim.

Had progressive with my cars.   Was very happy with them.  I've had no claims experience, thank god.   So when I become time to insure the LD I called around and they seemed to have the best most complete coverage for RV's.  I did learn that RV insurance is sold by the year not in 6 mo installments.

I'd guess that you could "google" the name Peter Lewis (who died last year) and see if you want to do business with the company that he was CEO of until his death.  I won't!

We have Good Sam insurance- luckily haven't needed it. Anyone with experience with Good Sam as an insurance co?  Or, who else do you recommend???  Love to hear your thoughts! Wendy

I've had Progressive for about six years now and have been very happy with them. First, I got a better rate by switching to them. Second, they're very easy to deal with via their website. Third, when my rig was struck by lightning a few years ago, Progressive paid very fast, didn't quibble about anything... and even insisted upon paying for my labor when I fixed some things myself! What's more, my rate went down, not up, the next year. Same thing with my deductible, thanks to their "disappearing deductible" program.

In short I have only good things to say about Progressive. (Thanks for the tip about Peter Lewis, by the way. After reading about him, I like the company even more.)

Agreed, Glen. That's why I switched carriers seven years ago without any consideration for price.  Malcolm

Thanks, everyone, for all the additional input.  It's greatly appreciated!   We will probably go with Progressive.  They seem to offer some of the best coverage for rvs.

We're looking forward to meeting more LD owners at a get together.  Hopefully soon!

Judie, the cashing the check closing the claim is a popular myth. The only time that is the case is when you are handed a check and also asked to sign a written release of all claims. Without the release the claim can be re-opened. Which is something that happens often. For instance, you take the car into the shop, hand them the estimate written by the claims rep and the shop doesn't agree or after beginning the work hidden damage is found then it gets re-opened and the shop handles it with the insurance company.
Your experience with Progressive is not what is typically heard but the experience you have with any carrier can vary based on who the individual you are dealing with. Was the rep an employee of Progressive or an independent that Progressive pays to handle claims when they don't have a rep that works a particular area.
Independent adjusters can be great but if they have too much on their plate you can have the experience you describe.
All of that said, I had Progressive but only had windshield claims so no real experience. Rates went up significantly in my state and I switched to GMAC who is now National General Insurance.
In March, I experienced a theft of over $4,000 of personal property. The check was mailed to me for replacement cost the day after the loss. So I am quite happy with them.

I too have GMAC/National General Insurance. I recommend them without reservation. Failed a claim for rubber roof damage on an SOB. They replaced the roof with a new one one. No increase in premiums. To date I have not had file a claim on our 2011 TK.

One agent NOT...   That was the feature I liked the most about changing to Progressive,  Converting to NO AGENT, using their web site.  What a relief never having to deal with my useless State Farm agent.

Our Progressive quote is a couple of hundred $$ less and much better coverage than State Farm offered, regardless of having SF for 40+ years and clean records/ no accidents.  Not crazy about our agent, either.  We "inherited" him when our agent retired.  Our accounts were transferred to the new agent and new city  without any notice to us.  Every year there is a mistake with our homeowners policy and I have to make a few calls to remedy their mistake.

Hi Dave,

I've got Progressive through USAA - and recently had a claim due to damage from a broken battery (house). (Not much of a story to the claim, just be careful not to drop a 6v batt when trying to replace it with a new one.)

Progressive handled the claim quickly, and professionally, and referred me to a body shop that did excellent work. I couldn't have been more satisfied. The referral shop even took care of a couple of items that were not included in the claim at an unbelievably low fee.

And I'm a retired Allstate insurance agent, hopefully a little better than the previous responder's State Farm Agent, lol.

Dave, here is one more thing to consider.

With either Progressive or GMAC/National General you can purchase replacement cost coverage for your LD if it is new.

However, with Progressive after 5 model years the policy pays actual cash value in the event of a total loss. Nat Gen converts to payment of your original purchase price for as long as you own the policy or until they decide not to provide that coverage any longer, I guess.

Things could have changed with National Gen because I purchased mine from GMAC and the coverage has continued with NG.

Our LD is a 2006 and the annual cost for that coverage is $201.

I should add that other RV insurers offer replacement cost coverage as well but all that I have checked end the coverage after 5 model years.
