Towing Honda Odyssey

Considering buying a used 27' Lazy Daze. Is it safe to tow a Honda Odyssey on a dolly? Total weight would be 5,021 lbs.  We use the Odyssey as a garage for our recumbent tandem.

The short answer is "no." Even late-model LDs are only rated to tow 4,000 pounds, and older ones (you didn't say what year this coach is) can handle even less.

Now, if you get the hitch beefed up by a good welding shop, you might be able to do it. Other possibilities: since the Odyssey is built with an Accord drivetrain, it should be towable four-down. Or you could have it fitted with a Remco lube pump. Almost anything would be better than a dolly, which adds lots of weight (not to mention logistical problems).

If you are trying to decide between a Lazy Daze and a Foretravel or other diesel pusher you really need to determine how you will use it and what you are willing to spend on operating/maintenance costs.

We have had a LD Mid Bath and a Foretravel 36' U320. Both are excellent machines but our style of RVing was completely different between the two and the support costs for the Foretravel were WAY more.  The Foretravel was much more comfortable and an absolute joy to drive.  It really was like taking our house with us.  It was 10 years old when we bought it and 14 when we sold it.

When it comes to maintenance, Foretravel owners talk about Coach Bucks (1 Coach Buck = $1,000).  You can easily go thru a few Coach Bucks on any maintenance or repair.  An oil change on the Cummins ISM engine runs over $250 and if done at a truck service agency they will probably grease the brake calipers with the wrong grease which will cause them to seize on the road.  That could involve towing and a Coach Buck to purge the grease and lubricate properly.

We have decided that a Class C gets us to the places we enjoy camping much easier than the Class A and costs a lot less doing it.  It can also sleep more people so grand kids get to come along.  Consequently, we will soon take delivery of a Born Free on a diesel Ford F550 chassis with 4 wheel drive!  We almost went back to a Lazy Daze but the comfort features and 4WD of the Born Free easily won us over.

We settled on the Triumph in a configuration much like the LD Rear Bath but are having the bathroom from the rear bath Splendor installed, so it is kind of a hybrid.  The factory is very accomodating about customizing these units and they have made many significant changes over the last couple of years.

Not that many would recommend it, we towed a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 Summit with a 1999 LD RB back and forth across this great country twice doing the four corners and many of the national parks with no problems.  We took it easy going uphill but cruised at 65 on interstates when necessary.  We really do try to stay off interstates and prefer secondary or two numbered state roads whenever possible.
