Ted, you have the right plug. I believe the correct size is 17mm but if the 3/4 fits snug you are fine. It will probably take a 1/2 inch drive with an extension as you don't want to try and break it loose with a 3/8 inch as it is probably too tight. There should be a truck place in Cortez or Dolores area nearby but you may have to make some calls. If there is fluid that has leaked and you can fill the reservoir it may get you to a dealership who can replace the unit. Farmington is a big oilfield area so you may want to consider that. Good luck. John Leach Co.

Thanks John

I've managed to get the plug out and it was 17mm. I got fluid coming out as I started to remove the plug. Larry told me that sometimes the units are overfilled from the factory, leak and then stop. We'll see.... At least that is hopeful...
I have an appt scheduled for this Wednesday at D&L Auto in Cortez. The owner told me not to panic, let him have a look. He's work on the units before so, again, we'll see

So glad you found a place. You will find that in these small towns you will probably get good service. Don't know how long it has been since you changed the fluid but if it is close to being needed you might find someone competent for this also. You make the call. Safe travels and let everyone know what happens as this might turn out to be a place someone else could use. Take care, john

LD parking brake issues. I have a 2004 RB for ten years and no problems with my parking brake. If I ever do I'll go to wood chocks  along with my rig in park. Also will avoid parking on steep hills. There is two ways to skin a cat.
Fire trucks and army trucks always has a set of chocks. Harbor freight has inexpensive rubber chocks.

"LD parking brake issues. I have a 2004 RB for ten years and no problems with my parking brake. If I ever do I'll go to wood chocks along with my rig in park. Also will avoid parking on steep hills."

--- The 'parking brake issue' discussed in the current (and previous) thread(s) has nothing to do with wheel chocking or parking on steep hills; the issue is that the transmission-mounted parking brake unique to the E-450 chassis has a *fluid reservoir* that is usually overlooked as part of routine maintenance. The owner AND the mechanic, even a Ford truck mechanic, may not even know of this reservoir's existence.

You might want to read previous posts which contain links to past discussions on this topic and photos of the reservoir fill location; the parking brake fluid reservoir on your 2004 may well be 'dry' or low.

As ever, YMMV.

I know that the driveline/transmission parking brake was discontinued as of the 2008 Ford E-series chassis, and I've added that information to the "Changes" page of the Lazy Daze Pocket Guide. But what I don't know is in what chassis or model year the problematic brake was first used. Can anyone tell me, so that I can add that information to the Guide?

Andy, I don't know this for sure (Larry may see the thread and reply), but since Rock Auto doesn't show parts for a transmission-mounted parking brake for the 1999 model year, it seems reasonable to think that the first year that the transmission-mounted parking brake was used on the E-450 was the 2000 model; that's when the 'Econoline Super Duty' was re-badged as the E-450.

Please post when you know the real scoop! ;-)

I always use the Ebrake. To start with the drive slopes to the street. 2 feet in it's 28 feet lenght.
As for camping after I level the MH on the ramps/blocks I first set the Ebrake then place the trans in PARK. Then and only then remove my foot from the brake peddle. I do not want the MH to slip off the blocks and now have a frig problem.
I can not say for the F450 trans but when I bought my 1989  Dodge minie van I traded in a Sherman Tank. (1998 ply.) One thing the dealer told me was to alway use the Ebrake. The new transmisions are not made to hold the car in place like the old cars. Ever since that I always use the Ebrake when I park.
I have been doing it this way for 40 years now and see no reason to change. The MH replaced the slidein campers mounted on a 72 GMC, 85 Ford and then a 98 Dodge Diesel. All were 4 wheel drive.

Thanks, Joan. That sounds reasonable, so I've updated the Changes page to reflect a 1989 start date for the transmission-based parking brake. If anyone knows other wise, please let me know.

Andy, don't you mean 1998?? I know my rig does not have that type of transmission e-brake.

"Andy, don't you mean 1998?"

Sorry--I did make the correction to the Changes page (driveline brake begins in 1999), but I typed the wrong date in my message here. Thanks for catching that!

A friend has pointed out that the driveline parking brake came in with the widened Ford "E350 Super Duty" chassis, which premiered in 1996. (The following year they renamed it "E450"). So until I hear otherwise, I'm going to assume that was the start date for the accursed parking brake.
