Add bunks in rear room of 26.5mb
Yahoo Message Number: 147190
We are a family of 6 that would like a small class C RV with quad bunks in the rear room.  The 26.5mb layout seems like a good candidate for this set-up.  Does anyone have any experience with adding two bunk beds over the existing couches in the rear room?  In looking at photos, I think we would take out the upper cabinets that line the top of the room.  I have scoured the internet and this forum and I don't see that anyone has tackled this mod.

Thanks!

It is possible to remove upper cabinets in a Lazy Daze, but it isn't easy. I removed an upper TV cabinet (about two cubic feet) in my 2003 Lazy Daze, and it was one of the hardest jobs I've ever done. I ended up using a keyhole hacksaw, saber saw, prybar, sledgehammer, chisel, Dremel tool, and several other tools. Removal left the wall and ceiling badly scarred, so I then had to patch the holes and torn places. And that was just a foot-and-a-half wide cabinet!

You see, unlike most RV makers, who staple flimsy cabinets in place, Lazy Daze attaches them from outside the walls (before the aluminum is put on) with l-o-n-g screws... and as a rule, Lazy Daze uses about twice as many fasteners as are needed to do any given job. Thus removing a cabinet involves a lot of ripping and tearing--you'll either have to pull the screws through the walls and ceiling (head last), or rip them out of the cabinet pieces and then hacksaw the protruding shanks off flush with the walls.

To make quad bunks, you'd have to remove not only both sofa/beds and the upper side cabinets, but the upper rear one as well. I won't say it can't be done, but I will say that it won't be fun.

And there's an easier way. If you're willing to set aside your bunk bed idea, a midbath can sleep six people. Two adults or three small children will fit in the queen-sized overcab bed; another child or two can sleep in the bed that the dinette makes up into; and the rear couches make up into either two twin-sized beds or a single king-sized bed, with plenty of room for for two adults.

In short, the midbath is designed to do what you want, if not exactly the way you envisioned it. :-)

After extensively modifying my '06 MB I'll second what Andy said, don't start it unless you are prepared for a real task, or are willing to accept some issues.

Where would you plan to put the bunks, mid window height ? You could probably get by removing the cabinets, then take the paneling down above the windows. You replace it wit new to cover the damage that you will do to the existing. Probably will also need to re panel the ceiling from the accordion door back. Ya, it's doable, and, if you have access to the factory for replacement planning and trim it would be easier. JMOO

Hello,  I agree with Andy, but if you still need/want to build quad bunks you might be able to squeeze them below the cabinets if you put the bottom bunks at floor level.  You would still have to sacrifice the storage areas under the benches and would need to find a safe spot for the spare.  It would be much easier than ripping off all the upper cabinets.  With some modifications to the bench cushions you might still be able to use them to put together the king bed if necessary: king bed as the floor-level bottom bunk and two smaller top bunks.  Danny
