It was the best of volts, it was the worst of volts .  I hope Mr . Dickens will pardon the theft and mutilation of a phrase, but it seemed a good lead-in to my battery story:
Back in April, near the end of our 8-month winter's sojourn, we noticed that our batteries weren't doing a very good job of holding a charge  . I've had the Pro-Fill system on both of our LD's and had been happy with it .  Finally, on our last night out before arriving home, we were awakened at 0300 by the propane alarm screeching at us .  Hmmm, I pondered as I hopped out of bed .  Looking at the battery monitor the problem was obvious - we had a whopping 7 . 3 volts indicated!
Once home, I decided that our 7-year old batteries had served their useful life and replaced them with a new set . What was interesting, however, was that when I removed the Pro-Fill system, I found the batteries bone-dry! I had been checking them all winter and they had been fine . So now I'm hesitant to re-install the Pro-Fill system, opting for the time being to use the tried and true turkey baster method . If I do decide to use the Pro-Fill again, I'll be removing it now and then to visually reassure myself that the batteries are properly filled  .
We live just a few miles from the Trojan battery distributor of the entire northeast, so it's easy to replace them .  I did decide to go with the T-125's this time .

Hello ted

When I had the Pro Fill system I took it off once a year to visually inspect the batteries and clean the Pro Fill.  The Pro Fill is a  mechanical system with six floats and a check valve. Given time, all mechanical systems will fail.

Either way, you certainly got your monies worth from the seven year old batteries.

Enjoy your summer at home.

This is not the first time that I have heard of this problem. The Pro-Fill system not filling the bats. There are other reports of this on the net.

In January we replaced our two 7 year old T105s with two T145s. We full time and boondock a lot. I had been surprised that every time I checked the battery water it wasn't taking any on the new ones.

I do follow the directions by filling the hose and bulb first before connecting it to the batts. Today, I checked them and again no water needed. Took the valves out and ran water through the valves and water came out of all of them. Installed them again in the batts and now they took two squeezes before firming up.

I had visually inspected the levels and they all had water over the top of the plates but I am surprised how this worked out and have no explanation for it. They appeared to be installed correctly the first time and I saw no difference in installing today.

I spoke with customer service at Flow Rite and he did say that the life expectancy on the pro-fill is probably 5-7 years as they can accumulate scale.
