Jekyll Island, GA in October

Many many years since I have been there, but sounds similar. It is an island and pretty far removed from things off island. The town of Brunswick will have most all that you need. St. Simons island to the north of Jekyll also is a good place to tour and has lots of quaint places to see as well as churches and food places. It can be reached by going into Brunswick and following signs to get out to St. Simons island. October is a good time, but there might be flying teeth that time of year, not sure. For the uninitiated, flying teeth are tiny gnats that bite...

Enjoy.

---- I was in coastal SC and GA a few years ago; those nasty little buggers (or their close 'midge' kin!) hatched out in early April and immediately homed in on any exposed skin on anything warm-blooded. The things are relentless; most of the locals seemed to pretty much ignore them and just walked around in clouds of the things, brushing them away, but I was covered with welts for about two weeks. Maybe the things can sniff out the tourists! There are some heavy duty midges in the eastern Sierra, too; they usually hatch sometime in late May or June, depending on snow melt. I guess the trick is to be aware of midge hatch times and locations and be somewhere else!

Joan, How long is "Midge Season" in the Sierras once it starts?  Is there a web site that announces when it has begun, like maybe "Incimidge"?

Avoiding midges sounds like a worthy enough cause to merit some attention from civic-minded folks!

Lest you think I am completely nuts, I actually get an email from Tohono Chul (a gardens-type place in Tucson) that tells, day by day, how likely one is to see the night blooming cereus plants that they have there on their grounds.  They call it the "Queen of the Night" or "Reina de la Noche", and it is a really big deal.  People gather with flashlights to take nighttime walks around the grounds to see the flowers.

Ever been up on the Western side of the Sierras in the springtime when the Lady bugs hatch along stream bead and migrate by the million down the slopes, into the San Joaquin Valley, where billions of insect meals are waiting? Well, if you happend to be get in their way, they will happily munch away on you, and, yes, they draw blood.
Who knew? Never trust a Lady....bug.
We found out one night while camping at Wawona, in Yosemite NP.
These same bugs are harvested and sold in nurseries for control pest in home gardens.

When you were here several years ago, I could have shown you several cereus plants on our patio.
Almost  everyone of them will flower sometime during summer, each on one night  after midnight, with the flower lasting less than one day.  They produce  a glorious flower, worth losing sleep over.

'Incimidge'!? Good one! ;-)

My experience with biting midges (no see 'ums) in the eastern Sierra has been in late May through about mid-June or so around Bridgeport, June Lake, and Mammoth, but I know that the timing of the hatch depends on the weather. I don't know how long the hatch out lasts in the eastern Sierra (or any other midge location, and there are MANY; the things get around); after being chewed on, I didn't stick around to find out.

For 'midge info' in the eastern Sierra, I'd check with the Inyo NF district(s) and/or the tourist offices in the areas/towns along 395; they *should* know when the things are out.

And, Larry is right; the sweet little ladybugs can and do bite, particularly the light green ones with spots! But at least ladybugs and midges aren't known to transmit diseases, unlike mosquitoes and ticks!

All I can say about this is I HATE BUGS! I have a problem here in Oregon with pincher bugs. I may set off some gas bombs and stay the night in my friends place. They are starting to BUG me LOL.

We have moved to a different house here in the complex now, but the house next to ours before had a plethora of these beauties that would bloom at a certain time of year.  They were planted where the house shaded the plants for several hours after sunrise, so I had plenty of time to stalk them with my camera.  The photo that I could find quickly just now on my hard drive shows four of the flowers in full bloom, and one from the previous day's offering, on a really small plant.  Looks like I took the photos on May 12th, 2009.

Just so lovely.  I am inspired to make a blog post of it!

WOW!  Who knew?  They look so cute and cuddly!  ;->  One kept crawling across the top of the laptop screen once; she stayed for an hour or so, and then vanished.  She was much too active to photograph, though I tried mightily!

That was fascinating, Larry, right down to the last twitch where it pulled its petal thingy off the other plant and went to sleep.  The coloring of the changing light during the last few seconds was very pleasing.  Thank you for sharing that.

I cannot find a definitive comment of twice a year in Georgia in the literature, except for a mention of multiple generations being possible in a season, but I think those buggers occurred about twice a year near Brunswick, Georgia, and the islands. That place is where the Marshes of Glynn was written and the marshes are everywhere. The weather is warm for a very long time, so they can reproduce many times. We lived there eight years when there was a Navy base there and survived the bugs by having very fine screens on our porches and windows and did not go out when the bugs were flying, unless we moved very fast...

In early May of this year we stopped in Brunswick GA for 2 nights.  We discovered an excellent restaurant in downtown Brunswick...the Indigo Coastal Shanty.
It appears to be very popular, the food was not only creative, but also truly excellent.  The waitresses were very friendly and service was great.  You can "Yelp" and "TripAdvisor" it for reviews...we were thrilled with our lunches.
Brunswick's downtown is easy to walk about.  There is parking everywhere.

The Gulf Side of the Florida Keys periodically is inundated with No-See-Ums, similar, nearly invisible tiny little biters that go right through normal screens. Outside if there's any wind at all you're OK, if not, they are awful.
