Lazy Daze owners in Colorado?

Hi!  I am wondering if there are any Colorado LD owners here and what your experiences have been camping in the sometimes cold (even in summer) Colorado mountains? They seem to be rare here.

I had a ball there two summers ago--traveled all over the state with friends for four months, dry camping exclusively in beautiful, remote locations. For details and photos, see "My Colorado Summer."

We have run into some pretty interesting weather here from May through October, but nothing that has stopped us from going out there. What are your particular concerns ? I guess my big fear is getting caught in a hail storm. The only time that has happened to us was in Minnesota. We had fist size hail that demolished a lot of the plastic on our former rig.  Larry in Monument, CO 2008. 24' FD

Beautiful pictures, Andy.  What a great trip! Larry, I have been caught in snow in July in the high country and camp more from March - November, so I wondered how well the LD does in somewhat colder conditions (not so much tanks freezing but more just how the insulation in the LD compares to other Class Cs).  I have owned Bigfoots previously and I know LDs aren't 4-season campers like them, but wondered how they fared as 3-season motorhomes.

My Colorado summer saw me traveling with a friend in a Lazy Daze midbath like mine--a former Bigfoot class C owner--and another friend in a 29' Bigfoot class C. Both were full-timers. From talking with them, my impression is that there's little or no difference in interior comfort during cold weather, but the Bigfoot's dump valves are a bit less less likely to freeze. I will say that the overall build quality of the Bigfoot--especially the exterior construction--seemed inferior to Lazy Daze's.

You will not have problems in the mountains from early April thru October.  The amount of water in the tanks will not freeze solid. You may get a little  surface freeze but that is all. My 2005 24 ft. with the changes I have make will  keep me warm down to - 5 with no problem. The night will get cold but the days  will warm up into the 50 and 60 most of the time in early spring and late fall..
We camp at 11000 feet for the 4th of July and there are some days it may get  down to freezing but that is at night. If in the late seanon you think the  holding tanks may  freeze add a little rock salt to the tanks.

Karen. I agree about Andy's photos. The San Juans are our favorite part of the state, but the weather can be unpredictable. As others have said, you should be fine in the LD as a three season rig. We looked at the Bigfoot, and weren't convinced that we'd prefer it over the LD. One big factor is the big windows in the LD. Ours also has the solid foam insulation. We know folks who have added a catalytic heater, but the stock furnace takes the chill off in a hurry. It just uses more propane and battery power. We have dry camped in Alaska for 7 days and not run out of gas water or electricity, and we used the furnace every night so it should be fine unless you find a sneaky blizzard. Hope this helps.  Larry in Monument, CO 2008 24' FD

I live in the  Denver. A stock tank will last more than 2 to 3 months of use. At  night  the furnace is set at 40 to 45 and it will not run most of the time.  Besides I replaced the furnace stat with a day night unit. Have it come on just  before you like to get up.
