Mildew January 20, 2014, 05:48:11 pm Yahoo Message Number: 144650I have a problem with mildew on the lid of the cabinet in the bed over the cab. I've lost two pillows to it recently. That's where my pillows seem to migrate to. In searching online for a possible solution, I came across HyperVent. Has anyone ever used this? Its not cheap, but cheaper then letting this problem continue. Or do you have a better solution.I do not use heat at night and often sleep with my window open to reduce, if not eliminate condensation. So was a little surprised to find this on my pillows today. In my research, those with Memory foam pads will find mildew under the mattress unless they use HyperVent. Is this a gimmick? Re: Mildew Reply #1 – January 20, 2014, 06:12:20 pm Yahoo Message Number: 144652Melinda, this is just a guess, but perhaps the moisture that is causing the mildew is coming from condensation on the aluminum frame of the window, then dripping down to the hard surface under the window, thence under your pillow. If that is the case, my way of solving the issue was to use flexible foam weatherstrip tape, about 1/8" x 1.5", with which I covered the aluminum inside surface. Any moisture on the inner parts of the frame such as the glass guide/slide area will drain out the weep holes. The foam tape provides enough separation between the cold metal and the warm, moist air to prevent condensation.It worked for me. How to tell if condensation is forming there? I suggest using either toilet paper or paper towels, spreading them out onto the cabinet top, holding them flat with some masking tape, and check them morning and night for a few days, especially after any heavy cooking in cold weather. If condensation is forming and dripping you should be able to see signs of it. Alternatively, if the pillow is resting against the glass, that could cause the pillow to become damp.Ken F in NM

You can find chemicals and/or air filtration mechanisms that will keep the visible level of mildew spores down but you may be ignoring a hidden source of the problem. Certainly the inside of the windows collect condensation from the inside air humidity and

There's nothing there.In fact what I discovered is a spot the size of a silver dollar about 2-3 inches from the inside edge (where it opens) vs next to the window. Nothing else. I am presently in FL, the increase of humidity may have played into this but I suspect this may have started with a sick cat. Had quite a mess on bedding & a little on pillows - got it all cleaned up - but apparently not thoroughly dried. The mildew spot did not penetrate the lid, it is only on the surface. Cleaned it with Clorox and will stay on top of this until I get back to dryer climes. I have a nasty allergic reaction to mildew and mold, it doesn't have a chance in he__ of surviving. Laughing here.And Ken - I got that tape after my last issue with condensation, but did not apply it then. I figured out how to improve the situation. I have not had any signs of water leakage, no dripping, staining, discoloration or anything else. I have had frozen condensation on window casing - visible ice, but it gets cleaned up before it melts. Let's just hope I don't start getting those kind of problems that you mention.
