I invested in a pneumatic stapler with a narrow crown for the job. It took me a day, with several breaks, and came out well. Most of that time was spent pulling out the old staples. I added two throw rugs to catch the dirt when coming in. I had my carpet supplier cut them to size and edge bind them.Upholstery, on the other hand, is something I would never consider.Ken F in NM

As to adding insulation, I used a very good, dense pad and topped it with a dense thick carpet. My old carpet was matted where my feet normally rest and bare feet in the morning would feel cold. Now, it seems less so, but that is not an objective assessment.Ken F in NM

Then when it got cold, I bought wool carpeting and installed it myself. It was a job but not too difficult to do. The carpet is removable--it's not tacked down and is in 3 pieces--for when the weather gets nice again. The difference in temperature is amazing and I didn't even use any padding. I'm in California and would have definitely used padding if I was in almost any other State. One drawback about the wool is that it sheds pretty severely, but it hasn't been too much of an annoyance. Just needs vacuuming frequently to keep the hairballs down. So, I have Summer and Winter flooring and I love it!Cynthia
