Eternabond roof sealant: Long-term performance?
Yahoo Message Number: 144441
I know some of you have used Eternabond roof sealing tape. So I'm wondering how it's holding up long-term. Does it appear to be a permanent fix, or near-permanent? Have you had to replace it ever? Is it still sealing?

Thanks!
:-)

I've had the Eternabond on our LD roof for the past five years. Never a leak.  It's been fantastic!

I don't know about 'permanent', but a roof seal job using Eternabond tape (either the 4" or 6" widths) can last a long time *IF* the surface preparation is correctly and meticulously done.  If prepping the to-be-sealed seams and surfaces is sloppy and/or 'short-cutted' (including making sure that the roof screws are not 'popping'), poor results, i.e., bubbling, not sticking, edge-lifting, are inevitable.

The seam seal between the roof and the overcab on my 2003 was a poor job from delivery; I cleaned out the bubbled, dirty-water-filled pockets in the goopy sealant, prepped the surface, and applied a strip of Eternabond.  The only reason that I 're-stripped' this seal when I did the complete roof about three years ago was that a low-hanging branch had snagged a couple of little rips in the original Eternabond; the stuff is not impervious to cuts, scrapes, and holes being poked through it.

So, yes, Eternabond lasts, but be sure to prep the surface well before carefully applying it (remember, there are no 'do-overs' with this stuff!) and check periodically for any loss of 'integrity' in the seal.

As ever, YMMV.

Thanks for the replies, good info. I presume Eternabond recommends a cleaning procedure before applying the tape. But can you suggest a method that worked for you?

If you have your rig professionally washed don't let them use a high pressure wash on the roof. Some of those sprays have enough force to go right under the eternabond.

"...don't let them use a high pressure wash on the roof..." ---

JMHO, but I suggest not using a pressure washer *anywhere* on one's rig; there are multiple 'vulnerable to high-pressure water penetration' areas, i.e., the refrigerator, water heater, and battery compartments, the seals around the windows, the storage compartments, and likely a few more areas, too.

As ever, YMMV, but after seeing the 'layers' that a neighbor peeled off the surface of his driveway with one of these things, I'll stick with a carefully-wielded garden hose for rig cleaning! ;-)
