Heat Pump on 2010 and later models
Yahoo Message Number: 144016
Eight months after taking delivery of our coach in April 2010, the heat pump quit cooling or heating. This was the first model year that LD installed the Dometic heat pumps model # 651516.301C0. Upon inspection by the service technician the freon had leaked in the area of a coil of the dual high pressure tubing that was clamped to unit's frame next to the compressor. Dometic replaced the unit with an identical model. Fortunately, I also bought the Dometic extended warranty at that time with an expiration date of 2015.
Last month heat pump #2 quit heating or cooling. Upon inspection it was found that there was freon loss in the same location as on the original unit. Apparently when Dometic coiled the dual high pressure tubing clamping them tightly to the unit's frame, the expansion/contraction of the copper tubing caused wear in the tubing side walls allowing for a leak. There is no way to add freon without replacing the entire unit. A possible way to avoid the problem with this model heat pump is to un-clamp the tubing coils and insert a pliable plastic foam between the loops of tubing preventing the friction between the loops.
Dometic now has recognized their engineering error and to correct it has added rubber insulation on the tubing where it is coiled and clamped. The new replacement heat pump model # is 651816CXX1C0. The old model has been discontinued.
The third replaced heat pump is still covered by the original extended warranty. I STRONGLY recommend to all to buy extended warranties on ALL Dometic products if possible when taking delivery of a new LD.
