Water Leak in 1994 TK - UPDATE

The short answer is it was a leaking/non-functioning water pump.

Here's the long answer:

  • The pump would periodically cycle on and off [Jim Brenneke]
  • Hairline fracture in fitting [Kristin].  Never could determine for sure.
  • Trough cut in floor that allows water to "move" around the LD [Don Symms].  This turned out to be true and was one of the reasons the last "leak" was coming from around the kitchen range/oven instead of by the water pump.  We were also getting periodic leaks both on the outside left and right sides of the LD when the LD wasn't perfectly level.
  • No water around the pump.  Once yes, but latest episode no.  Best guess now is it was a periodic leak.
  • Pressure test system [Bumper].  I never could hear air leaking but the system wouldn't hold air.  The compressor would cycle on and off to keep air in the system.
  • Not sure where the leak comes from [Steve K].  Turned out to be true.
  • Updates to rig that would have caused screws being driven through any of the water lines or tank.  None.
  • Check fitting with liquid leak detector [Larry].  Did this from the water tank to the water heater and all around the pump but found no evidence of leaks.

In the end what finally worked was to fill the water tank about 1/4 full, turn on the pump, and watch and see if water started to saturate the floor around the pump, which it did.  And not only did the leak come from the pump, but the pump had failed.  So my only conclusion is that the pump would leak sporadically and it was pumping sometime and not pumping other times.  Took it to the local RV repair shop and my conclusions were confirmed by a pressure test of the system.  New pump in and working fine when I left.  Thankfully it was not a leaking tank.

Thanks for posting that excellent followup, John! It'll be helpful to others who need to troubleshoot pump problems in the future.
