another tire story

Well, this was the last straw. Tires ALL less than 2 yrs. w/less than 5,000 miles, weight excellent, keeping on top of pressure and heat build up....rig equally balanced [found a place to weigh each corner as well as the axles].

These are BF Goodrich Commercials tires.
I have had three duellies blow out-- two from tread separations, one from side wall disintegration; two front tires replaced for sidewall cracking, and now this. This happened as I am returning from driving Hwy 1 @ Bodega Bay, Ca. after 101 Oregon Coast--so those of you know how narrow, twisting, and steep those roads are. I feel VERY lucky everything unfolded as it did....I think my jinx days are finally over!
Coming up I80 to Grass Valley, started  feeling vibrations coming thru the steering wheel..and I *knew* there was something going on w/the front end--my fear was that it might be tie rods, brakes dragging, etc., but hoping it was only a badly out of balance tire, flat spot...
Pulled over twice, once to double check the air--[fine], then a few miles later as I was becoming increasing concerned with the way it felt to run the infra red heat sensor on them..also fine. Thank goodness it was rush hour, and the traffic was going really slow, a lot of bumper to bumper crawling [can't believe I was HAPPY about that!].
Made it home but not happy at all with what the possibilities might be.

Took 'her' into Les Schwab this am...there was a huge bubble on the driver's side front tire. He said that in his experience the BF Goodrich were not reliable enough for a rig my size, that he saw this kind of thing a lot on  RVs. Also that he saw the side wall cracking on the Michelins...a lot.

I asked about the Goodyear all steel side walls, and he said that they were a better tire but had issues with heat build up, and that again, he saw more than a few large/heavy rigs w/them come in with damage.
I discussed at length the issues I have with my rig--being always at weight or even over several hundred pounds occasionally. My driving style..55/58 mph; length of continuous driving...1 1/2 to 2 hrs. then a stop. NOT traveling during extremely hot spells if at all possible, then limiting driving time.

He suggested Toyos. They install a LOT of them on large trucks, haulers, horse trailers, etc., and he thinks they have a pretty good track record. I've known this man for the past 25 years, and I trust him to give me reliable feedback. I wish he had been available when I purchased my current set in AZ from Discount Tire. This particular shop does a lot of heavy truck and RV service and business, so they are more knowledgeable then any of the Discount Tire shops I've dealt with.

Soo...I'll let you all know how it goes with Toyos. They certainly can't be any worse than the Goodrich tires I'm taking off!

Bottom line, I'm getting all six tires replaced tomorrow.

We put Toyos on both our dually truck and fifth wheel in 2009 and haven't had any problems with them. They're close to the time we'll have to replace them due to age, and we may very well buy Toyos again.

Had always used Michelins (came from factory with them) and had been satisfied until had belt separation on both fronts 2,500 miles from home in AZ.  Station had only Firestone Transforce  available at price less than the Michelins.  Didn't want to wait so I had them installed.
Now my FAVORITE tire!  Ride well and the tread wear is excellent.  Check them out.
