Not sure what you mean by safe trip...as in getting there safely or once you're there. Warning...the local law enforcement is not to be trusted.  had a friend live there for a year. Long story, but he is dead now. Local cops there are unscrupulous and locals think anyone not from there is rich and will try to exploit and rob you and more. Please be careful.

Don't feel bad Andy, at the Olympics a  NBC announcer introduced the Belize Olympic team as "from the island nation of Belize".

Over 200 island and cays but most of the country can be visited without a PFD

I can't imagine going there in my LD.  I was there once, on a boat-based dive vacation.  The land was, in a word, swamp.  The intensity of insect activity was very high until we were beyond the barrier reef.  I would think spending time there in an RV would be extremely unpleasant, but if you go, good luck to you.

 We went through Belize about four years ago with the Adventure Caravans  Central America trip: http://adventurecaravans.com/tour/central-america/

The trip as far as down to Belize was not bad at the time (it got a little  more adventurous later in the trip).  You could check their route on the  web site.
 With the conditions in Mexico at present, however, I would hesitate to make  the trip by ourselves.

In 2008 my 3 kids and I drove Ciao Baby down to Belize and beyond.  It is indeed an adventure, there are plenty of police stops (most authorized) throughout Mexico, and many people have done it, although "safe" is a relative term.

I'd advise getting on the websites and Yahoo groups with like-minded folks.  For some reason precedent seems to justify our crazy travels!  Specifically check out the info on Harriet's http://www.99daystopanama.com and the Howe's http://www.travelin-tortuga.com and join the Escapees group for the World Wide Travelers group. Belize is a beautiful country, easy to drive around, some campgrounds are available, and they speak English!  Here's our blog if it helps:
