Hi Friends!  I just feel the need to share since you are all family, and I want to encourage our new LD members so...
Ned and I just took our oldest daughter, Jazy, off to college to UT-Austin (Honors :) ) a couple weeks ago and it was bittersweet, as many of you can relate.  I was so excited for her and also SO GRATEFUL that we'd bought our cherished old LD in 2007 and traveled together as much as we did.
Because suddenly, as Jazy left for college, it struck me hard that this was the end of the road with her!  Our trips to the U.S. National Parks, Canada, the Arctic, Alaska... you know it all because you guys were my encouragement and inspiration!  Down through Mexico and Central America, over to Disney World, up to Washington, DC tracing our U.S. History, and then trading RV's with the Irish family to explore 21 countries of Europe, and the next summer up to Newfoundland and Labrador, down through the NE.
I look back and I think, "Wow! The chance to do that and develop her as a child is truly over now."  I'm so grateful for what we've done.  Of course, there's independent travel now for her (she spent 3 weeks in Guatemala on a medical volunteer trip this summer), but the RV travel, time together as a family having fun, creating dramas and solving problems, seeing the world in that most unique, fascinating, real way of RV travel with children... was over for her.  I was a little stunned.
We've now obtained a season pass in the official UT RV Tailgating lot for football games!  Whoo-hoo!  On our of first trip there over Labor Day weekend, Ciao's catalytic converter became almost fully clogged.  But we problem-solved and found a storage lot for her in Austin, got a rental car to take us home at the end of the weekend, and later located a highly-rated mechanic nearby, where she's getting fixed up now.  It actually will cost us less in gas to store her in Austin for 3 months of football season, than to drive her back and forth to The Woodlands, so all's well that ends well.
I cannot say our road has always been straight or easy, but it's been one great adventure along the way!  And we have met some Angels too who have come to our rescue in times of need.
So if you're a young family considering an RV, let me encourage you now.  Or anyone who is waiting in the wings to grab life by the collar.  Go for it!  Have fun and make those memories while you can!  Carpe' diem!  You don't need a new or expensive rig.  You just need to get going!

To YOUR fantastic travel adventures! Tessa in TX '92 MB- Ciao Baby!

Congratulations Tess for all you've accomplished over these past years. I'm so proud with you, for sending your daughter (with honors yet!) to the land of orange and white pick-up trucks. Hook 'um Horns!

Great post Tessa.  What a wonderful way to spend quality time as family by RVing together seeing and experiencing North America.  Best of success for your whole family as the kids enter college.
