Return route ?

Done the deed in Sturgis, now to get my little red set of wheels back to Oregon coast for the Ladeze GTG first of Sept. Got some great ideas on how to get to Sturgis from Grass Valley, Ca. so thought I'd ask in reverse..? Google maps shows three routes...all about 1,450 to 1,505... via I 90 West...1,452 I 84....1,540 and US 20 West...1,507..the one that I like the looks of, as it goes close to Crater Lake, and under Yellowstone.
But all suggestions greatly appreciated. I don't have to rush to get there like I did to get to Sturgis [four days!]. And the Rally was a hoot!

If you travel I-84, you can get off at Exit 374 after crossing into Oregon from Idaho and take US-20/US-26 to Vale, OR.  At that point, US-20 and US-26 split.  US-26 is the northern route and travels at a higher elevation for much of it length going through John Day and Prineville before coming out to US-97 at Redmond.  US-20 is the southern route, taking you through Burns and putting you on US-97 at Bend.  Either route is OK.
If you have the time, visit Newberry National Volcanic Monument south of Bend and northeast of LaPine.  Our favorite campground within in the Park is Little Crater with most of the sites on the shore of Paulina Lake.    You could also take the Cascade Lakes Highway out of Bend:  OR-372/CR-46/CR-61, which will put you back out onto US-97 at Crescent.  It's a beautiful drive passing lots of lakes with lots of campgrounds.  And, of course, you'll want to visit Crater Lake.  Be sure to drive the Rim Drive around the lake and stop at the various viewpoints.  If you're up to it, there's a point where you can walk down to the lake and take a tour boat around the lake.  You can get more information at http://www.nps.gov/crla .

Have fun!

--- Linda suggests a good route, and, if you decide on this way, I suggest taking 138 from the north end of Crater Lake NP after a visit there; this road is a scenic drive, and leads into I-5 at Roseburg.  About 5 or so miles south of Roseburg on 5 is Hwy. 42 (I think the sign says "Winston" and/or "Coos Bay", but it's well-marked, whatever it says.) Head west on 42, a pretty, well-maintained, easy drive two-laner that leads to the coast; at Coquille, take 42S to Bandon, then take 101 down to Sixes River Rd. (Edson Creek group campground).
(Viable) road choices to the coast (from Crater Lake) are 42 or going all the way down 5 to Grants Pass and taking 199 and looping through a bit of northern CA before catching 101 again and heading back into Oregon. (I do *not* recommend trying the Merlin-Galice Rd./Agness Rd.; this is a goat track which takes off north of Grants Pass and ends up, eventually, in Gold Beach.)

Have a good trip.

I wish Linda could be my personal tour guide -- she always comes up with excellent information!
As to Joan's idea that you take 42 from Roseburg over to Coos Bay, it's a lovely drive along the Coquille River.  I recommend a stop at the Coquille Broiler on Main Street (the highway) for their $5.00 lunch and, if you haven't already read this year's Ladeze "GOSEEDO" I just sent, there is a weigh station about 6-1/2 miles West of Coquille on Hwy 42.  It's unattended, the readout is operating, and it's free!

Enjoy your ride -- see you soon!

If you take the suggested route through Coquille and you are there on the weekend, don't miss the melodrama at the Sawdust theatre.  Great fun!

Enjoy!
