Just a heads-up to check the tightness of the nut holding the spare tire cover in place and to carry a *spare nut* and nylon washers!
I was stopped at a light; a couple of nice people pulled up next to me and called out that the spare tire cover was open and flapping around! (I have no back-up camera, so I didn't notice.) The bullet nut and the nylon lock washer were long gone; it's a wonder that the cover didn't shear off! I made a quick and dirty roadside duct tape patch job and went on to the campground. The local hardware store had no 3/8" nuts except a wing nut (and no nylon washers to fit); this held as a temporary no-flap solution. Now to get proper replacement hardware and get the duct tape residue off the finish!

Joan,

You might try OSH. They carry a good selection of specialty fasteners.

"OSH filed for bankruptcy; Lowe's bought their assets. Story here:"

That's terrible news. OSH was the place I could find things that Home Depot and Lowe's do not carry. They have a better hardware selection but I guess that is going end, especially since our close by OSH and Lowe's are not very far apart.
The majority of HD and Lowe's inventories are limited to items that move quickly.
I'm being forced to buy more and more online now that the day of the well stocked hardware store is just about finished, the exception being True Value or Tractor Supply stores, when they are located out in the boonies.

Big sigh.

Ace Hardware stores are excellent. At least our local one is for sure.
Everyone said that when Home Depot comes to Whidbey Island that Ace will go down. That did not turn out to be true. Ace is still a true hardware place and every community needs a hardware source which HD and Lowes are not. Yes you can buy a limited variety of stuff in packages. But what if you only want one? You need a true hardware store for that. JMHO.

It did happen here in LA, where most of the old-fashioned hardware stores disappeared when HD, and later Lowe's, came on the scene.

--- According to what I understand about the deal at this point, other bidders have until August 20 to top Lowe's $205 million offer, but that appears unlikely. Some OSH stores will close (the only two in Oregon - in Portland and Tigard - are said to be strong possibilities) but many others in CA will continue as stand-alone businesses carrying OSH's current product lines and providing "not a big box store" customer service.  One long-time OSH employee I spoke with had the opinion that Lowe's was far better than Sears!  (OSH was held by Sears until being "spun off" at the end of 2011.)
I have no idea what will eventually shake out of the sack on all this; stay tuned!

Im sure some hardware stores closed, but its been over twenty years after HD and later when Lowe's popped up and Ace and True value hardware stores are alive and well here in LA carving out a niche with better service and a quick shopping experience. It appears combined we still have more than twenty stores in LA county and more in Orange County. IMHO OSH was just too big to not have full lumber and substantial construction supplies. One stop shopping for commercial customers keeps HD and Lowes busy during the week, OSH relied on too much on do it yourself home owners leaving most of their stores empty of customers during the week. Lots of overhead to support. Oddly  almost everything they sold could be found at Sears / Kmart who owned OSH creating more competition within their own brands. OSH simply didn't offer enough diversity to draw in the numbers they needed.

For over 10 years now, I've been wondering when our local OSH would finally close (it now looks like next month). During that time, there were two universal truths:

- it was always empty - I mean, morgue empty - it always had the best stuff - tools, seeds, specialty fertilizers/fumigants (they originated as a true 'orchard' supply store

Just wondering what OSH means from the one person who entered a reply?
The original Orchard Supply Hardware was in Santa Clara CA and I believe was setup as a coop by the local ranchers. The Santa Clara Valley was primarily orchards. As a kid I remember the place was amazing. The variety of "stuff" was something to behold. The valley was a great place to ride our motorcycles. Suburbia happened and destroyed it. Now it is known as Silicone Valley. Today I hate to even drive through that mess.

The demise of the Mom and Pop hardware stores is a shame. I remember the day when I could walk in with a worn out plumbing part, show it to the counter person. They would walk me back to the appropriate bin and retrieve a replacement. All with no forklifts, loud sirens, long lines, etc. Sometimes I wish we could turn back the clock a few ......

Larry,
Know how  you feel.  Can never find any "good components" in any of the "hardware stores."  I've even resorted to trying Ace Hardware a few times, however, I had no interest in their wide selection of pots and pans.  I agree, True Value and Tractor Supply are decent places when the are located in areas that are primarily rural.  Currently near a good TSC in Traverse City, MI.
Also I am currently near a Menard's store, which to me, is "Lowe's on steroids;"  wider range of products and more selection among a give type of product.  Also a lot of knowledgable, people wandering around that will answer questions about products and make suggestions.  Talked with the store manager at Traverse City, MI store (for a different reason) who told me that he didn't think Menard's had any desire to invade the western part of the USA.  They are doing great in this area and current plans are to open more stores in the midwest.  (Darn!)

Happily, here in Chico, CA we still have a locally owned hardware store that has been in business since 1871. When I walk in there they greet me by name and always have what I am looking for. Wooden floors that creak when you walk through, the smell of cedar pads for swamp coolers.....we dearly love our local stores, no matter what their product, and do our best to always shop there to support family run businesses, and that includes restaurants and the rest. Yes, the big box boys have moved in, but they are a last resort for us.

How awful!  I haven't been in one for fifteen years, but the memories of the joy of wandering around in the one in Sunnyvale are still with me.  I loved it when DH would need "just one little thing", and we would be there for an hour, at least.  So many things to look at.  We STILL have two sets of drawers that fit perfectly in Gertie (Lazy Daze), our 40-foot pusher (Mountain Aire), and now in Dorrie Anne (Lazy Daze).  Have never found them again, although we would love to add to the collection.
Here in Sierra Vista, we have a really good ACE Hardware that is owned by a local couple who totally pride themselves on giving great customer service.  One employee (Bob) is especially sought out for his expertise in finding just the right things that is needed.  Our first stop is always ACE, and then, if not there, off to Lowe's or Home Depot.

Still pining for the "good old days" of customer service!

Virtual hugs,

Btw, the one in San jose (on alum rock) is always busy. I agree that they carry some good stuff.

Also happily in Tustin, CA, we have a locally owned hardware store, Adam's Hardware. I like going in there and they always have what I'm looking for, tho I often need help finding it as the place is small and stuff is jammed in there.

Here's part of a Yelp review of the place written a year ago: "This is the greatest place to shop for hardware. The guy who runs it is Denny, and he is a young 88 year old with dedication to service. He has been the owner since 1972, and is there every day. The cash registers don't date past 1989. This character was an aeronautic engineer in the 70's and can fix anything, so call him for your hardware needs."
