Does new hard flooring increase road noise??
Yahoo Message Number: 138052
I'm a few months away from the actual project, but I plan to replace our flooring in our LD this summer (minus the cab). I'm going to tear out the carpet and current vinyl flooring and do a laminate hardwood or something similar throughout (I'm not set on a particular flooring yet, and know there are many posts about which materials to use. I'll surely reference them when the time comes).
My question is this: For those of you who have gone to hardwood flooring throughout rather than replacing with carpet, do you notice an increase in road noise? Has anyone used a sound-reducing underlay before laying down the new floor? What did you use and are you happy with it?

Thanks in advance!

While I replaced my old soiled carpet with the floating natural cork flooring instead of the hardwood or ? types, I think the results would be about the same, and no, it did not increase road noise. In fact it is quieter. I choose the natural cork because of some of the replys commenting on the sometimes very strong odor of the synthetic flooring options.
The Allure was the one i saw referenced in most of the research posts I read, both good and bad reviews.
I did use an underlayment--reasons being for moisture protection and for cushioning as well as it was supposed to help with noise. I believe it does all three. The cork isn't as thick as the Allure products I looked at --[this was three years ago], and was a bit more expensive. I was also taking into account the added weight, as I have a 30ft. IB.
But I love this flooring. It is warmer to bare feet, softer feel, no out gassing of materials that I had heard reports of with other types of floating flooring...as close to natural as i could afford. I do have throw area rugs to protect the entry area, in front of the sink/stove and one large one in the front room, where I have an office chair I roll around in. It is holding up very well, and I have a 75 Lb. Doberman with big feet who has put it to the test as well as myself.
Clean up and maintenance is a snap...so much easier to care for than carpet. I don't think you'll regret taking out the carpet in exchange for any of the alternate flooring options, which ever you choose.

I  bought it from Home Depot, and the last time I was in one of their stores, they were still carrying it. There were three or four different shades...I purchased the "natural oak" as it goes very well with my interior.

Can't remember it off hand--will go and see if i can find the receipt, or you can google  for it. There were other sources, but Home Depot's prices were the best--and when I bought mine, it was also on sale which made it less expensive than the Allure.

Gini, If you were replying to me (DaCrema) no need to go to a lot of trouble.  I will not be doing anything soon.  Our dogs will force us to make a change some day though.  Cleaning the mud and burs is going to eventually get old. I like the idea of cork.  Take care.
