'91 fuel capacity

As it turns out my 27' 1991 ford has a fuel capacity of at least 50 gallons. Follow my math: I had 1/4 tank showing on the gauge ( before it stopped working), I added 24 gallons, I then went back today and filled to the top ( 16 gallons). So.....50 gallons is the number I'm going with. When I filled it I made a point of removing my keys from the ignition. The gauge is still not working.

I would'nt bet on it being 50 gallons. For one thing, fuel gages are nortoriously nonlinear, so 1/4 gallon as read on the gage is likey less than that in the tank. Second, your arithmetic is wrong. If 40 gallons = 3/4 tank, then 1/4 tank = 13.33 gallons. So if you really did have 1/4 tank remaining, the tank would be 53.3 gallons.
