In my 82 both fuel pumps are external and cheap and easy fixes. That's the way I like it.

I was just writing in #137281 that mine was not so expensive.
Including a tow from the storage lot to the shop, I got off just less than $1000.  But if it's dead, you're stuck.  Maybe I'm just lucky or timed it right: Livermore in February.

We are apparently the latest victims of the dreaded Fuel Pump Problem.
Our mechanic has diagnosed a failed FP and quoted about $1200 to order and install a new one, which includes $500 for the pump itself and the rest for labor to drop the fuel tank and install the pump. Someone else mentioned $1500 as a probable cost. Has anyone actually done this, and if so, what did it cost you? I am frankly horrified at the price.

I just replaced my fuel pump with help of my brother.  Had to unbolt and lower unit, pump out gas, replace hoses, etc.  MAke sure you are careful when removing hoses from valves on top of tank.  In my 93 26.5 RB, those valves are no longer made by Ford.  Pump cost about $100 from AutoZone, so your cost may be high.  It was not fun, but it did save a lot of $$ and it started right up!!  Hopefully I will not have to do this again.

Was this the first time you replaced the pump yourself?

How rusty were the strap fasteners?
Was your pump working well enough to pump the gas out into a container? Or did you do it another way?

Thanks for the info!
Were you able to look inside the tank after you removed the pump assembly to see how much crud had accumulated inside?
Was the filter screen on the bottom of the pump assembly dirty or plugged up at all?
