I'm baffled about how the 3-stage converter become "confused".  IMO, a "smart' converter" is the only way to go
Hi Larry, after I saw your comment, I went back to the PD site to re-read their FAQ:

*** 11. How long will it take to re-charge my RV battery? Battery recharge time is controlled by many factors, such as battery size, converter output rating the number of 12-volt lights and appliances that are "ON" during the re-charge cycle and how far the battery has been discharged. In our testing a 125-AH (Amp Hour) battery was fully discharged to 10.5-volts and then connected to a PD9160 (60-Amp) Converter/Charger set to our standard output voltage of 13.6-volts. The battery reached full charge in 70-hours.
***
Note how they specify 12VDV, not AC. Duh. I was interpreting it as amps coming off the hook-up circuit - period. Something like the PD4645 can handle 45 amps DC. If you're in some way running, say 15 amps DC, then there is 30 available to re-charge the battery.
However, I was envisioning a situation where we'd be running the 16 amp AC unit (Coleman Mach 3), plus some other 120v items, which in my mind would be reducing the amps available to (re)charge the batteries. Wrong!
So, thanks for the schooling (ouch). I guess the good thing about it is I cancelled the AMZ order and bought a PD4645 from Randy at:

If anyone else finds themselves in a similar situation, Randy sells these units comparable to the price @ AMZ, but even better, PD will recognize any warranty claims through him.

Not to steal the thread. I second ( or third) Best converter dot com. Randy is great to deal with once you can get him on the phone.

YMMV.

You will be very happy with this upgrade. I had Larry install the same unit in my LD and the performance is much better than the OEM unit. If you don't already have one consider the Linklite or Blue Sky battery monitors. Then you will always know the true charge state of your batteries.
