Just returned from a trip to D.V. Check out Scotty's Castle if you get the chance. And fill up with gas before entering the park. If you have a 4X4 toad I would recommend a side trip to Saline Valley. There are some interesting individuals at the Hot Springs and old mining operations. For lots of good info on D.V. go here: http://wikitravel.org/en/Death_Valley_National_Park

I haven't been in a number of years but have camped there dozens of times when I was younger -- most of the time I've spent up in Texas Springs CG which I prefer over the Sunset CG which seems to much like a parking lot with rocks, no tables or fire pits.. YMMV!

We camp every year in Nov for the 49er Encampment at Stove Pipe Wells. There are 14 full hook up sites for those so inclined and much quieter than Furnace Creek.

We take different routes north and south between Washington State in the spring and fall, but if we're traveling south on US-95, we usually turn off for Death Valley at Scotty's Junction and stay at Mesquite Spring Campground, which is about 5 miles from Scotty's Castle.  It's at around 1,800' so is cooler than Furnace Creek when we're there in October (usually).

Yes, it is...at least it was in early November when we went by.  We were going to go that way as we usually do, but the road was closed around Scotty's Castle.  Since we like Mesquite Springs Campground and didn't have any real desire to stay at Furnace Creek, we bypassed Death Valley this year.
