Fire Extinguisher

We purchased our '93 22' MP from the original family owner(s). Everything is factory stock from the date it was shipped almost 20 years ago ... including the fire extinguisher.
I read through the fire safety primer in the LD companion written by Andy & WxToad, but I still have a few questions:

1. I cannot for the life of me figure out what size extinguisher I have (the one in the entryway). The make & model is Ansul BRK Model BF5, but I don't think it's carried anymore since I couldn't find any specs.
The primer mentions getting 14oz extinguishers, but I want to make sure at least this particular replacement fits within the factory side cut-out. If I end up getting a few more, the specific size doesn't matter since I'll be mounting them myself.
I'd like to get foam, so if anyone knows a good replacement, please let me know.

2. This might seem like a silly question, but my original extinguisher is still sheathed behind a break-out plastic strap. How do you get the extinguisher out in order to replace it without breaking the strap? Or do you break the strap, and then unscrew the entire plastic holding cavity and re-install another break out strap?

I know these questions might be somewhat arcane, but this LD is a low mileage (59.5k), highly optioned (454 tbi, 4L80E, heavy duty cooling - tranny, oil, a/c, etc, etc) vintage RV. It's sort of a hot rod and was maintained to a 'T' by the original owner until it literally entered a 10 year period of stasis. I'd like to keep it completely stock & original as possible without any undue modifications.

As usual, TIA for any tips/advice,

Karl

I doubt if it is a 'break-out' strap. Most likely it is cam-lock, and bending the tab back will pop the cam from its seat. These can be re-attached the same way. The numbers in the diamond indicate the categories of fire it will kill, so match those up, and shop for one of similar circumference and overall height.

Karl, I never was able to find a replacement that would fit in that cutout in my 2003.  Not only you have to look for circumference and overall height as Steve mentioned but also, to find one with that stubby nozzle that was prevalent in years past.

Just my opinion: one extinguisher isn't enough. Not nearly! So replacing the old one is pointless. Instead, leave it where it is and add new foam extinguishers in strategic locations--kitchen, living area, bedroom, cab, and so on--so that you can grab one no matter where you are when  fire breaks out. I believe Mac McCoy offers a bundle that includes several small extinguishers and one large extinguisher (all foam); that's a good way to go.

Last year, we had the Winegard Trav'ler installed on our RV, so no longer need the portable dish (on a tripod) that we have.
It's available to anyone who wants it...you just need to pick it up (we're located east of Quartzsite near a little spot in the road called Brenda).
We'll be here until the end of January; after that, it goes in the dump.
This is a 1000.2 (Western Arc) dish that picks up the 110, 119, and 129 satellites.

Andy, Steve, Joan, et al, you know you're receiving good advice when it agrees with your own opinion. LOL!
I was coming to the same exact conclusion - many times with vintage items, there can be components for "show" and some for "blow". (An old adage with reference to handkerchiefs.)
So, I went ahead and ordered the 4-pack kit (one SS-45 + three SS-20) from Mac the fire guy. I'll leave the original exactly where it is.
Last question - what's everyone's favorite location(s) for these four extinguishers?

I've written about this in Eureka:

And by the way, I also carry a small foam extinguisher in the passenger-side footwell of my car.

All over local news yesterday in Milwaukee:
"An adult male died in a fire early Tuesday inside an RV mobile home parked on a residential lot in the 1400 block of LaSalle St. in Racine, fire officials said.
Fire officials said that when firefighters arrived on the scene, the vehicle was engulfed. The victim was declared dead at the scene. WTMJ Radio, citing the Racine County medical examiner's office, identified him as Peter Jxxxxx, 48.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Both the Racine Fire Department and the Racine Police Department are investigating the blaze."

So sad.

I bought a case of twelve foam extinguishers. They are located:

Each door well of our RB Two above the exit/entry door one in our toad CRV one in our pickup one each in the painting studio and print shop one in the bedroom one in the kitchen one in the house garage two in the shop (where the LD is kept) building (welding table and soldering station)[/quote] These are in addition to the powder type extinguishers at these locations.
Because the closest fire station is 1/2-hour away from our ranch, the shop and house also has a 100' 2" fire hose on the outside tied to a 1000-gal water tank.

I gotta say this - a fire extinguisher in an RV is NOT for putting out the fire.  Don't think that way.  It is for suppressing it enough to allow you to escape.  If it happens to actually put the fire out, that is a blessing, but do NOT make that your mental objective.  The wood used in the paneling on our rigs is thin.  Used to make a campfire, we would call it kindling.  Once it catches, it will go very quickly.  It can seem to be out visually while still expanding and progressing in the many hidden spaces.  Add to that the toxic nature when burned of the many plastics in our rigs, and we simply are not equipped to safely stay inside.
The value of multiple small extinguishers is to assure that there is one close at hand when you need to grab it and run.  None of us are John Gage or Roy DeSoto and without 600 gallons of water, air packs and turn out gear we should not be staying in an enclosed space with fire present.
Don't stay and fight.  Hit a fire with a blast as you are escaping, but don't stand there fighting it, and don't go back in.

The first job of a cop on the scene of an accident is to check on injuries; then to prevent another accident from happening.
The first job of a fireman/woman on the scene is not to put out your fire; it is to prevent your fire from spreading to your neighbors. Only after that has been accomplished will your house fire be attacked with earnest.
As told to me in numerous training classes. Ken is right-don't be a hero. You ain't John Wayne. Get the Hxxx out in a fire. Fire is also the worst nightmare on either an aircraft or a ship. 'Nuff said.
