Night light and plastic clip to hold door open
Yahoo Message Number: 135406
The little night light that comes on near the floor when I turn on the porch light has burned out on my 1985 LD.  How do I replace it?  Also, am trying to find where to buy the plastic piece that is attached to the coach to hold the entry door open.

If it is the same as my 2001, the lens just snaps off a flat plastic plate, held on by two screws. I removed the two screws on each side and then I snapped of the lens from the back of this plate. Two little clips are part of the lens and I feel it is safer to not break these clips by unscrewing the plate first. The bulb is a 194 and can be purchased just about anywhere.
I know LD is slow to change but our rigs are 16 years apart.  Hope I was some help.

I've never found the plastic clip that holds the door open in any RV parts catalogs. however I buy mine at a local RV repair shop for about $2. So give one a try. It has been my experience that these small RV repair shops carry a lot of hard to find RV hardware replacement parts that are difficult to locate online. Lutz

Nit picking here... they are made of nylon, not plastic!
I secured several from the Mothership early on but due to the high mortality rate I've long since switched to the metal types. They last a whole lot longer.

Steve -- do you mind if I ask where you found the metal type? I had a semi working nylon one on my '85 and when Ramon & I parted the '86-87 (don't recall the year now) Lazy Daze out in the desert this past summer it had the metal kind but the two used vastly different hole sizes for mounting and I couldn't use that one.. I think our '85 had a smaller hole compared to the slightly newer '87 that I have the other set for.. As long as I can find the right sized metal capture part I'm good.

I've been using this battery operated LED light for a couple of years and have been VERY HAPPY with it.
 http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Beams-530-Battery-Operated-Motion-Sensing/dp/B00196WS6S/ref=sr_1_7?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1354130556&sr=1-7&keywords=battery+motion+sensor+light

It has 2 lighting modes at night, low and high.  As soon as it detects motion and it does that very quickly, it goes into high mode.  The rest of the night, it's in low.  I have a MB LD and use 3 of these lights: one inside the bathroom (on wall above toilet), one placed near the floor in the area in between the bathroom door and the sofa area.  The third one is located outside on the door of my LD.
When I get up at night from the sofa sleeping area, the light comes on instantly (before my feet hit the floor) and I can see perfectly to make my way to the bathroom.  As soon as I open the bathroom door, that light shifts into high mode.  I never use any lights in the bathroom other than this one when up in the middle of the night.  The outside door light can be seen a fair distance away and when you are within 15 ft, it shifts into high mode.  There is easily enough light to avoid fumbling with keys or whatever.  As Andy recommended recently, make sure and use some type of glue (silicone) to glue the outside light to the door.

I have to replace the batteries about once per year.
Originally I had the solar charged battery light (fence post light) recommended here but after using it, I thought it had some issues.  I looked around and found this one at Sears.  Lights 2 and 3 came from Amazon.
These lights work very well for me, but I'm sure somebody has one that is way better.  Ain't that always the case.

Bob

Data from the Amazon and the manufacturer:

No Wires--Attaches Anywhere
Attach a stair light anywhere: to your hallways, stairways, steps, bathrooms, bedrooms, closets, decks and more. The Mr. Beams MB530 motion sensor LED step light offers simple installation with no wiring and no electrician needed. Uses 3 C batteries (not included)

Mr. Beams - MB530 Step Light at a Glance:

Battery-powered, wireless LED step light

Attach anywhere

Designed to work in all weather conditions

Motion sensor with a wide angle range of up to 12 feet

Automatic shut-off to conserve battery life

Mr. Beams - Weatherproof
Tight seals and IP44 weather-resistant materials allow a Mr. Beams motion sensor indoor/outdoor LED step light to work in all weather conditions.

Auto Shut-Off
The Mr. Beams motion sensor indoor/outdoor LED step light turns off automatically when no motion is detected, conserving battery life. The automatic shut-off period is adjustable using a switch to select between 20 or 60 seconds of delay from the last motion that was detected to shutting the light off.
Motion Sensor Activated
The stair light instantly turns on when it detects motion, and can detect motion from as far as 12 feet away with 180 degrees of vision.

Bright LED Light
The bright LED and housing design focus the light where you need it--perfect for wall-mounted lighting applications.
LED Glow Mode
In glow mode, the LED light will remain turned on at a very low light level. At the very low light level, the light serves as a marker light identifying where the edge of the stairs are, for example. When a user approaches, the motion sensor will turn the light on to a bright light output to provide more light. After the auto shut-off time in which motion has not been detected, the MB530 will return to LED glow mode.

Durable, Energy-Efficient LED
The bright LED never needs replacing--it's so efficient that you will get more than 5,000 activations on one set of batteries with the auto shut-off set to 20 seconds.

Recommended Applications
The MB530 from Mr. Beams is a battery-powered, wireless, motion-sensor LED step light that requires no wiring. Simply insert batteries and attach to any surface. The unit is designed such that you can mount it in a convenient location and it won't get in your way. A built-in photocell activates the motion sensor only after the sun has set or when the lights are out. These are fantastic and bright stair and wall LED lights for hallways, stairways, steps, bathrooms, bedrooms, closets, garages, attics and basements. The MB530 is weatherproof for year-round illumination. Attach these lights anywhere in minutes without an electrician. Mounting options include double sided tape or a mounting bracket that attaches with screws.

Indoor and Outdoor Lighting Solutions
Mr. Beams LED lights provide indoor and outdoor lighting solutions where you need them most. Intelligent motion-sensors activate battery-operated LED lights for hands-free lighting. All units are IP44 rated, which means the weatherproof design will satisfy both indoor and outdoor LED light applications. All Mr. Beams LED lights install easily--no wiring, no electricians--so you can be assured of quality LED lighting anywhere.

Fall Prevention Application
Inadequate lighting is a leading cause of unintentional injuries due to falls in the household. The MB530 LED motion sensor step light can reduce the likelihood of falls by illuminating stairs and hallways. The LED glow mode operates all the time to provide a marker light for someone to know, for example, where the stairs start. When someone gets close enough, the motion detector will turn the light on brightly to offer real path or stair lighting to light up the walkway.

I changed over to a magnetic door stop, it holds almost as well as the 'pinch type' but don't break. The mounting holes are different, but I opted for something reliable:

At Amazon $4.99 http://www.amazon.com/Unknown-Magnetic-Door-Stop/dp/B000A7OOZ0

At Lowes $5.98 http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?partNumber=308840-46882-27116TNXLG&langId=-1&storeId=10151&productId=3353172&catalogId=10051&cmRelshp=req&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1

I was able to find a white one at the local Lowes store.

Thanks Jerry.. I'll check it out at the local Lowe's -- does it handle the weather OK? That would be my only concern as it appears to be designed for indoor use..

I don't trust my memory on this but I seem to recall that I got the metal door holder (male&female) at the Mothership. I also believe I used the original screws.

Steve,
Your memory is fine.  Vince replaced out nylon door holder with a metal one gratis while we had the rig in for warranty work in July 0f 2006.

Thanks all.. I will checkout both options and see which works best in my situation.. I will also ensure that I use some non-silicone sealant behind the parts to ensure no water gets into the screw holes..

With these magnetic door catches do you have a problem with the entry door slamming shut from wind?   Suggestions as to how to keep them open when the wind is blowing?   Thanks     Gale

I use a small bungee on windy days, it does open easier than the 'pinch type' but I have had that one slam shut from the wind too.

"As Andy recommended recently, make sure and use some type of glue (silicone) to glue the outside light to the door."
Actually, I *don't* recommend using silicone sealant for any exterior application. It doesn't have particularly good adhesion (especially on vertical surfaces). And when it lets go, it's a major pain to re-attach the item, because nothing sticks to silicone residue--not even silicone!
For exterior use I recommended 3M Dual Lock or 3M VHB tapes, both of which have held up for years on my rig's exterior, holding my solar fence light in place through thousands of miles in all kinds of weather and over some really rough roads.
By the way, I'm not sure what issues you had with the solar fence lights, but they've worked very well for me and several friends. For an exterior entry light, one of these is perfect, because it turns on automatically at sunset, off at sunrise... and best of all, never needs batteries. For interior use in locations where there's not enough sunlight to charge a solar-powered light, the battery-powered light you suggested is more appropriate.

Thanks Edward, but my light does not have a flat lens.  The white lens is sort of half round.  I unscrewed the two screws and the whole light unit comes off, but I don't see a way to remove the lens.  Anyone have any other ideas?

I'm sorry to confuse you. My lens is half round also. The plate it is attached to is flat.
If you have unscrewed it look at the back. Arn't there clips on either side of the wires? If not I'm stumped.

Good luck

Arlene, the black hood over the white lens is held in place by tabs on either side. If you gently squeeze its sides together, you can remove it.
Don't squeeze too hard, though, because the tabs can break off. I broke one, and ended up having to use a washer to hold the hood+lens assembly in place on one side.
