Penetrating Oils for rusted bolts November 29, 2012, 04:11:56 pm Yahoo Message Number: 135462This article came to my inbox today. With a little Google research I found this was published in 2007. Disclaimer: 1) I did not do the test; this was sent to me, so I cannot personally verify the findings. 2) Mixing combustible fluids like acetone or laquer thinner, and working metal on metal with those mixtures without using spark proof tools may be risky.MikePenetrating OilsMachinist's Workshop MagT published some information on various penetrating oils that I found very interesting. Some of you might appreciate this. The magazine reports they tested penetrates for break out torque on rusted nuts. They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist. They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.*Penetrating oils ........... Note this "home brew" released bolts better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results.Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is almost as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.Godwin-Singer is in Largo, FL. Its great for long-term soaking where the acetone will have evaporated away before actually trying to remove a nut or bolt. Liquid Wrench and Kroll are also proven oils. There are times where nothing will loosen a well rusted nut other than heating it with a torch. When dealing with rusty environments, a little anti-seize applied to the threads will keep it clean and easy to removed. http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_11151_10001_965578_-1?ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=965578&cid=sc_googlepla&gclid=CMejlLTA9bMCFal7QgodVxcAkALarry
