Just a heads up.  If your planning on buying a new one, don't wait too long.  You might end up with sub-par Mexican-built Fit.  Especially the first few to roll off the assembly line.

Sorry, but I don't go for racist generalizations like "sub-par Mexican" or "Chinese-made crap." If Honda and Toyota can turn out topnotch cars in their southern-US plants, there's no reason to think they can't do the same in Mexico. It's just a question of enforcing strict quality standards, and they've shown that they can do just that.

That seems to reveal a bias against the skills of southern workers.

And yes some Chinese products are crap and I think they are intentionally made that way. That says nothing about the people in general.

Hi Andy,
 Thanks for saying something. It seemed quite prejudicial to me, but as LD group guest, I don't feel I should be commenting about the group. I have one of those Kentucky Toyotas (2002), and it's a great car; my best computer monitor came from China. I see no reason why Honda can't be successful in Mexico.

I don't understand how generalizations about Mexican and Chinese workers are bad but it's okay to have negative generalizations about Southerners which are part of the United States.  I really resent that!

With words like Racist and Prejudicial, this is starting to sound like a Treyvon Martin press conference.
 My comments were regarding build quality and attention to detail and not whether or not I like Mexicans.
 It's a fact that crappy products can come out of any country, but there are some countries where manufacturing in general is superior, like Japan, Germany, and of course the US.

Sub-par goods can be made anywhere and so can good ones. No need to single any group out.

Danny, thanks for clarifying your meaning. We're all in agreement that good cars can be built just about anywhere, and I think we can put that part of the discussion to rest now.
 You also raised a point that has been overlooked in this discussion: the first few cars off a production line can sometimes be a little dicey. From the reliability stats I've seen over the years, Honda seems to be pretty good at avoiding this--even the first Fits were very reliable--but it is something to keep in mind when shopping for a car.

Danny, It might interest you to know that in 2009, J.D. Power and Associates rated the Jaguar (and Buick) number 1 in vehicle dependability passing the Japanese Lexus.  Somehow I don't think you were aware of that based on your Jaguar vs Japanese comment.  See

 Let's go back to the '50's, when "Made In Japan" equalled cheap junk.
 Does anyone remember the Ford Pinto?  When I was in college, they were fairly new, and Ralph Nader had not yet sunk his teeth into them.  There was a news article about a Pinto owner who was so unhappy with the crap quality in his vehicle that he drove it onto a parking lot near the Ford plant that built it.  He put up a sign offering one sledge hammer hit for a dollar.  He made his money back on the car.  A Ford spokesperson, asked to comment, said "What do they want for $3000?"  There is no country or group of people who have a corner on quality - or lack thereof.
