Solar panel disconnect fuse location
Yahoo Message Number: 127461
I have an 03 24' FL with the RV-30S solar panel controller. When I'm connected to shore power on sunny days, the Trojan batteries boil a bit and some liquid escapes through the cell cap vents. Water level is above the plates, but just barely. I want to stop the solar panel charging. I don't have a battery disconnesct switch. So the question is how. There's a 10amp fuse on position 10 in the 12V / 120V Center, Position 10 says it's "Positive (Battery Lead)".  If I pull this fuse, will that stop the RV-30s from charging the batteries. If not, I need other instructions.
I really appreciate any advice I can get Bill

On my '04 30'IB there is a fuse in an 'In Line' fuse holder with a tag that says "Solar Panel Fuse". Originally I believe this was a 15a fuse. Mine however is now a 20a due to an upgrade in panel wattage. Removing this fuse will stop the solar panel from charging your batteries.
However, the reason your batteries are "boiling" may be due to an excess voltage from the controller. If I recall correctly there should be a way to adjust the amount of charge voltage from the controller. Others on this board should know the procedure for that.

Steve, "Where is the in line fuse holder."

Mine's located near the top right hand corner of the DC fuse panel and connects to what should be the + 12v terminal although I didn't take a reading on it.

Steve, I don't believe there are adjustments on the RV-30S. I'll research it. It has been discontinued by the supplier.

Take a look at the following link:

This says your RV-30S is adjustable. Maybe a call to AM Solar is in order so that they can walk you through the procedure.

Have you checked the battery voltage while this is happening? If it is about 13.2V, then you should not be having the problem. That would be a symptom of a shorted cell. Even at 14.2V, there should be only a minor amount of bubbling, and no water boiling out, if the batteries are healthy.
One way to check for a shorted cell is to disconnect shorepower, wait a couple hours after sunset, then check battery voltage at rest (no lights or other drains for at least 1/2hr before). Battery voltage should be above 12V, up to about 12.7V.

Steve, Thank you. I'll be disconnecting shore power in a week and will do the test. In the mean time, i keep one 12v light on during the day and there's no bubbling noticeable Bill
