chirp sounds

In the past whenever I would turn the rocker switch, which sends power to the tv, off I would get a brief chirp sound. Tonight I went into the coach and when I turned on a couple of overhead lights on(not connected to shore power) I received a chirp sound at each light.  I checked the status panel and it displayed that my battery charge status was extreamly low.  Tried starting the generator and received some serious chirping sounds and would not start.  Not sure why the battery is low since nothing is running. I have two solar panels on top and we've been having a fair amount of sun each day.  Are my batteries going bad?

Do you have an inverter that beeps for low voltage?
I do, and it will beep when starting the genset.  The big battery dra

Rich,
Thanks for your input.  I believe I do have an inverter that beeps when the voltage is low.  From everything I've read all indications point to that.    I'm a real rookie at this rv stuff.  I'm currently charging the batteries via the shore line.

It's common. Came out the other day to find our furnace running - gas was turned off, so it just ran and ran... Was connected to shorepower, so batteries were fine - lucky. Always a good idea to turn the thermostat to 'OFF' - mine has been recalibrated down to 40F, but it still got cold enough. Our older furnace only draws about 3A, but newer ones are 5A or more.

My theory is that the chirp you are hearing is from the propane detector which reacts with a chirp when the power drops to a low level or the batteries are turned off.
I hear the "chirp" when I turn off my batteries with the battery disconnect switch when I put our rig into storage.

Steve,
I now believe it is due to low voltage which is due to a bad house battery.  Had both checked at Advanced Auto and one of them is bad.  I'm in the market now for some new house batteries.  The voltage was so low that I can't even get the levelers to retract.  As we speak, the bad battery is on a trickle charger in hopes of getting enough power to retract.  Kind a wanted to wait until next spring before I bought new batteries.  Didn't realize that low voltage would cause the levelers not to retract.  Glad I'm not boondocking, not sure what I'd do.

If you start the engine you should be able to raise the levelers off the alternator if your only problem is a low house battery.
Might have to rev the engine just a little...

Won't the levelers retract if you start the engine?

Garry,
I did run the engine for a couple of minutes but to no avail.  However, I called the Big Foot mfg and the tech told me that the levelers run off the house batteries.  Currently I have the house batteries out and will be putting a charge on them.  I know that one of them is pretty much dead as a door nail but I'm hoping to get enough charge on the other to get the levelers retracted.

Thanks for your input.

Yes they run off of house batteries but when your engine is running it should power the levelers via the alternator.  Only do this with the batteries in.

The chirp sound was from low voltage.  Seems the heater fan came on during a cold night (LP was turned off) and ran the batteries down.  Thinking I would just charge up the batteries enough to get the levelers up I removed the batteries and put a charger on them.  One was so drained it would not hold a charge.  The other charged fine.  Hoping the good battery would atleast raise the levelers I reinstalled the batteries but nothing.  Nothing in the coach worked.  Standing there with a dumb look on my face I notice I had re-installed the batteries BACKWARDS.  (Insert "Reverse Polarity" here) I switched them around but still nothing, it was too late.  Since the batteries were about seven years old I bought new ones and installed them correctly this time and the levelers retracted beautifully however, nothing in the coach worked.  Well needless to say, being the rookie I am, it was off to JTF RV Supercenter here in Conyers, GA.  Within an hour the tech located two "by-pass" switches that had tripped and showed them to me so I could press the resets. He also found a fuse to the radio blown. These folks were great.  Not cheap ($105) but great.  A good lesson learned by such a careless rookie mistake.  Pay attention and don't get in a hurry.  Thanks to everyone for their input on my dilemma.  I love this forum.

I'm curious, David, were the tripped fuses in the main fuse/breaker panel and was the radio fuse the one under the hood near the diode isolator?  There is a circuit breaker manual reset in the battery compartment.

Thanks for sharing your "fix".  Helpful for future reference.

Chris,
The radio/cd changer one was under the hood next to the firewall and had a label on it.  Of the other two, one was on the back wall of the outside battery compartment which you mentioned above and the other in the inside compartment, which contains the water pump, that backs up to the battery compartment.  My guess is that even to the trained eye they were somewhat concealed.  None of them were near the coach fuse panel.  Hope this helps.
This has quite the learning experience for me.  I'm not sure I still understand it all yet.
