dry camping, generator use concern for pets

To start out please first understand that I have never camped in an RV during my adult life.
How do you care for your pets when the outside temp is in the 90 - 100 deg range? Reading other threads about running the genset overnight has given me cause for some concern as we intend to travel with our dogs, not all the time but often. We thought how nice it would be when it is hot outside to leave the dogs inside with ac running off the gen set.  This would happen at events lasting a half hour (running into a store for supplies) or few hours (dinner with the daughter in grad college).  We thought one or both dogs would be safe in the RV for a few hours with the AC running.  After reading some of the comments in other gen set threads I am a little worried about leaving the genset running with no one inside for fear of carbon monoxide poisoning or general issue unknown to rookies.
Please note.  We are getting an RV for camping.  However at a dog trials (obedience, agility and the like) and saw a number of RVs which gave us the idea. My wife wants to compete our young pup in some events and I thought it would be ideal to use the camper as a base.

John, we travel with 2 dogs and use the a/c just as you mention above - for short periods.  We would not leave them for more than a couple of hours with a/c running just in case it froze up or the power went out.  Only on two occasions have we run the a/c all night and that was because of extreme heat. It's just too noisy.  Normally, we try to avoid temp extremes when we travel.  If your genset is running correctly, you should not have to worry about carbon monoxide poisoning.

Our SOB has a Recair (now sold as TurboKool) that used to be standard on LDs. It's an evaporative cooler that mounts on a vent opening, and runs off 12 volts. Our cat would lie on the floor or couch under while we were gone and be happy, even in hot weather. We like it, too.
Can't say how well it would work out in a larger rig, but it's good in our 24' unit. It's most effective in dry conditions, but it was still very useful east of the Mississippi.

I always hunt for shade even if it means walking a ways after parking. You have to be aware of the suns progression as the day wears on. It helps the AC immensely
