Ford E450 Wire Chafing behind Coolant Reservoir November 04, 2011, 06:14:20 pm Yahoo Message Number: 126388Ok Ford E450/E350 folks, it is time to burn a few calories. Grab your 5/16 inch socket wrench, pop your hood open, remove the the three bolts holding your coolant resevoir in the upper driver's side corner in the engine compartment, and pull the reservoir forward enough to see if the flange on the plastic coolant reservoir is cutting through the wires that are between the firewall and the coolant reservoir. You might want to "armor" your wiring before you put the coolant reservoir back in place. The entire process takes only a few minutes and might save you from experiencing some electrical gremlins caused by shorts and disconnections. Several Caravaners have found their wire insulation in various degrees of damage. You might add this procedure to your routine maintence task list. Details and photos are on the "Techsnoz" Yahoo group in the "Files" section in "Article64.pdf". I'm glad you mentioned the 5/16" socket; I thought the bolts had screwdriver slots in them! ;-)Joan

Re: Ford E450 Wire Chafing behind Coolant Reservoir Reply #3 – November 05, 2011, 11:16:01 am Yahoo Message Number: 126406Terry, Thanks for the heads-up. My 2002 MB has two wire bundles flanking the rear of the reservoir with 1/2" and 1" clearances. Your alert brings to mind a chafing problem brought to my attention by a Born Free owner. The power steering hose running downward may be in contact with the medal portion on the downward tube of the brake line resulting in chafing and ultimately loss of power steering fluid.Malcolm I still dry but cool Austin.
