Blown spark plug repair kit- Additions to the spare parts box October 01, 2011, 11:40:54 am Yahoo Message Number: 125618Ford V10s, manufactured up until the middle or end of 2003, sometimes suffer from blown out spark plugs. When a plug blows, it rips the threads out. Ford recommend removing the cylinder head for repair, at a cost of a couple thousand dollars. The aftermarket has come up with various machining tools for drilling the holes out and installing threaded inserts. There are small businesses that specialize in repairs such as WWW.BLOWNOUTSPARKPLUG.COM., who, for $500-600 (plus travel cost), will fix it for you. http://www.blownoutsparkplug.com/> Problem is when this happens a long ways away from a major repair shop. I found a repair kit at Napa Auto that is manufactured by by Dorman, a reputable auto parts company. https://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?R=BK_6003248_0309938905 > The kit is designed to be installed by any decent mechanic and requires no specialized tooling or training. The defective plug is removed and a new, tapered insert is driven into the stripped hole, cutting new threads as it is installed. A specialized glue, Loctite Red, is used to permanently install the insert. After the insert is installed, a new, modified Autolite spark plug is installed. If necessary, a good shade tree mechanic could do this repair on the side of the road, nice when you are many miles away from a repair shop. Even if you are incapable of performing the repair yourself, having a spare kit would provide a local mechanic with everything he needs besides common hand tools. In addition to the the kit, anti-seize paste and Loctite Red are needed. They are available in small containers for a few bucks at any auto parts store. For photos and more information see the link. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lwade/sets/72157627666057817/>Larry

Larry, is there a way to tell from the vin# if I am struck with this malady? Give me something else to worry about besides the fuel pump, water pump etc. Joe Hamm-2003

It can also be done without removing the head with the long reach installer I have.
