Doran vs Tire Traker tire sensors

Jim, The replacement batteries I believe were about $7. each @ Radio Shack. That works out to about $70/year for ten batteries plus the AA batteries in the repeater. The receiver has re-chargeable lith-ion batteries.
The TT sensor has a screw on plastic cap that protects the innards and there has been NO issue with moisture inside the unit. This summer we did a LOT of driving in heavy rain going to Newfoundland and back.
It does sound that Doran is only trying to push their product. You have to make a choice what suites   you the best.

I have not had any moisture problems with my TireTraker sensors either.  I might be able to offer some ideas on the heat damage though.
The rear wheels on my 2003 have braided valve stems extensions which terminate on either side of the center cap.  When the sun hits the wheel simulators just right, the simulator acts as a parabolic mirror and focus the sun on one spot.  I ended up with 2 deformed (but other wise working) sensors as a result of this.

I couldn't figure out what was going on until I was sitting

*Mike,
For what it is worth, you can get the batteries for $7.50 for a package of five from the Tire Traker dealer. That works out to $1.50 a battery.

Were I to be buying a system now it would be the Tire Traker because you can replace the batteries.

Who would have thought that was the cause. Great observation, Rich! My sensors are on the stock valves behind the wheel covers and should not be subject to the sun. I used to use those braided extenders until one came apart (braided covered rubber hose came off the crimped connector) while installing it to the inner dual tire. Poor workmanship and design. I am sticking with the stock valves - much safer.
