I've been reading all the hype regarding Nitrogen Filled Tires and am seriously thinking of doing the RV Tires, specially since the cost is $8-$12 per tire. Seemingly reasonable for the benefits they claim you'll receive.
I consider these to be in the same category as Synthetic Oil, proven to offer numerous benefits over conventional petroleum based oils.
I wouldn't use anything but synthetic oil and have been using it religously since Mobil first introduced it back in the 70's.
Has anyone kept records before and after to see if there is any noticable change in MPG, Tire air not being lost, Tire Temps lower, etc?
Regarding the Sylvania Silverstar Ultra headlights, they are showing results of better headlamp reach both forward and width visability and a much brighter light making for better visability.
Both the nitrogen fill and Sylvania Silverstar Ultra headlights appear on the surface to be worth while doing.
Would certainly appreciate hearing from those who has some evidence and/or experience that these two items are actually worth doing.

Thanks,

I converted to nitrogen first for my car tires (for both all season and for snows) then RV.  It was a little intimidating seeing my RV tires flattened then filled with nitrogen.  But nitrogen (with molecules something like 4x larger than o2) holds the tire pressure steady.  An experienced RV friend had switched in her RV and since filling with nitrogen never had loss of air pressure. I have enjoyed the same and such a peaceful feeling.
I cannot speak to other benefits. I can say that if you do have a loss of tire pressure, every tire person and thing I've read says it  doesn't cause a problem to add regular old O2 to nitrogen-filled tires.  My tire pressures have held steady so I haven't had to add any thus far.

Oh and Belle Tire charged me $5 per tire with no appt. needed.  I had stopped in ahead of time to check out price and process and I would suggest at least calling ahead.

I have not tried Nitrogen in my tires, but wanted to clear up a common misconception about the air we have used for decades.
The regular old air we breathe (and put in our tires) is about 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, and 1% other stuff.
Switching the 100% Nitrogen tire fills might have an impact (I don't know), but it's not the huge switch some suspect.
Also, as you can see from the air we already use, Oxygen and Nitrogen mix just fine in Tires.  You've been using a Oxygen / Nitrogen mix in your RV tires for years.

According to their test, there was only a 1.3 PSI difference in the loss of air between nitrogen-filled tires and *regular* air over a year's time.  That's not enough of a difference *for me* to spend the money to put nitrogen in my tires.
I can also see one huge disadvantage of nitrogen: complacency.  You get to thinking that your tires won't lose air pressure if they're filled with nitrogen, so you stop checking the air pressure.
As the above article says "Overall, consumers can use nitrogen and might enjoy the slight improvement in air retention provided, but it's not a substitute for regular inflation checks ."

If you want it buy your tires at Costco, they put in nitrogen for no additional cost.

As CU says: Bottom line: Overall, consumers can use nitrogen and might enjoy the slight improvement in air retention provided, but it's not a substitute for regular inflation checks.

Nitrogen has been used for decade for filling airplane and race cars tires. It's major advantage is that it is dry and will nor rust or oxidize the interior of the rim or tire..
All of our vehicles have tire from Costco, which fills all tires with nitrogen produced in their own machines.
I have not noticed any significant difference in pressure drop.
Is it good...yes, but I would not pay much for it.
Here's a thought, since nitrogen does not easily escape through the sidewalls, while smaller molecules do escape, the concentration of nitrogen should slowly increase as air is added to make up for pressure loss.

A 1.3 PSI difference over a year?
I wonder how much of the air loss is attributed to testing the pressure monthly or regularly?

There has to be an appreciable loss stemming from that...

Did you read the article?  I don't remember exactly what it said, but I got the impression that they only did a pressure test twice...once at the start and once at the end.  Maybe someone who still has the link can go back and re-read the article.

Maybe someone has already commented about nitrogen filled tires not being serviced except at nitrogen places, but I thought I'd add that thread.  We purchased our 1998 23.5 TK last year, then took a trip and found that the Costco tires had the telling green valve caps indicating nitrogen air:  tire service places wouldn't check and refill them if they didn't have nitrogen.  We did find a place that used just "dirty" air--look up the percent constituents of environmental air and nitrogen and you will find not much difference--and subsequently replaced the green valve caps with black ones.  Too much inconvenience for no real difference.  John Boles -- >
