Nästved rug at Ikea

Just a FYI....I keep throw rugs to protect the carpeted area between the couches in my TK, but finding one that is the right size, sturdy, closely woven (so dirt doesn't sift through to the carpet!), inexpensive, and *washable* has been only marginally successful.  Then I saw this Nästved rug on the Ikea website:
 http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40100535

One does have to go to an Ikea store to get this rug - it's not available online - but the dimensions are "close enough for ranch work" to the floor area size, and the rug is only $18.00.  It comes in dark green, natural (which wasn't available in the Ikea where I went), beige, red, and blue.  It's 60% cotton and 40% mystery fibers, kind of a low-pile chenille texture, but it does wash OK.  I bought two of the dark green rugs (the dark color will show less obvious dirt, but I think that the beige is probably the best choice for overall "appearance"), put them through a cold wash cycle (some color bleed, but that's expected with dark or bright colors), threw them into the dryer for about 10 minutes to get some of the "fuzzies" off, shook them out, stretched them while still damp to retain as much of the original length and width as possible (they lost about 2" in length and 1" in width) and hung them outside to dry. They aren't the loveliest rugs I've seen, but they look reasonably presentable, they wash, they seem sturdy, and they're $18.00!

As ever, YMMV.

On the website it says 100% cotton. Does the tag claim something else?

wrote: On the website it says 100% cotton. Does the tag claim something else? --- The tag on the rug *itself* gives the fiber content as 100% cotton (in 18 languages), and "made in India", but the tag on the display in the store listed the fiber content as 60% cotton/40% unknown fibers for this particular rug; I have no idea which fiber content is accurate in this case, but I do know that sometimes product content is labeled incorrectly.  The tag also says to "hand wash, cold" the rug; yeah, I'll just do that as soon as I can get to the creek and find a few rocks to slap it on! The tag also says to "iron high", to "dryclean", and "no tumble dry". I'll go along with the "no tumble dry" (except for about 10 minutes or so to de-lint" a little), but I don't have *anything* that requires dry cleaning, and the last time I even saw the top of my ironing board was to sweep the cat hair off it to press an outfit to wear to a funeral!
For 18 bucks, I'll take my chances on the possibility of the rugs containing "unknown fibers", put the things in the washer and throw them over a couple of patio chairs outside to dry! ;-)

I have the Camping World ones, but they have the same problem as all of the others I looked at.  They creep.  If anyone has solved this problem, I would appreciate hearing about it.

In our '83, I was puzzled by the fact throw rugs on the carpet always creep forward. A little experimentation showed it had to do with the directionality of the carpet fibers, so any rug will do it. This may not affect newer models the same.

On bare (uncarpeted) floor, I've been fairly successful with a type of carpet tape sold by some hardware stores, by Bed, Bath & Beyond, Target, and Amazon under the Mohawk brand:

http://tinyurl.com/2dsh3ew
It's 2.5" wide and appears to be a coarsely knit mesh of white threads in a distinctive triangular pattern, with a yellow backing. It works well on vinyl or wood floors.
On existing carpet, I've unsuccessfully tried every kind of carpet tape I could find over the years, including Duck "Hold-It" (worthless) and 3M Permanent Carpet Tape for Basement and Subfloors (not recommended for use over carpeting, as it may leave an adhesive residue, but I was desperate enough to try it anyway. No dice.).
The only solution that worked for more than a few days was to nail the corners of the throw rug to the subfloor with 1" brass-finish nails--going right through the existing wall-to wall carpet.

--- Roger, AFAIK, these particular rugs are heavier than the rugs from CW.  I'm not saying they won't "creep" and/or ruck up; I know that some people have put "non-skid" stuff under their throw rugs or sewn (the hook side of) Velcro along the edge of the rug to try to keep it in place. I don't know how well any of those solutions work; when a rug gets to wandering around, I just lean over and straighten it! ;-)

We have a carpet runner we got at Lowe's cut to the length we needed.
It "runs" from the rear of the MB to just over end of the carpet near the bath door. [In 2007, the carpet was shortened to end at the bath door]  It has two-sided tape on both ends. The forward end is taped to the linoleum and hold very well. This also reduces the step up, so we don't trip over it. The sides of the runner are under the couch legs and that is what really keeps it in place.\

No Ikea's in this part of the world

Our LD has light blue carpeting which shows every bit of dirt. We covered it with throw rugs right from day one.
We now use indoor/outdoor carpeting to cover the Factory carpet.
I made templates, from kraft paper, of the lounge and bath and used them as guides to cut the new carpet. The tightly fitted carpet helps keep the carpet in place.
Where the new carpet meets the sheet flooring, I glued velcro to the carpet and the floor and it does a decent job of keeping the edges of the carpet in place.
I have not found a carpet that doesn't stretch and require periodic trimming.

I solved my "creeping" problem by putting velcro on the back of the rugs in strategic places.  To explain what I mean - there's one sticky side of velcro that sticks to my carpet.  I purchased velcro by the yard & cut several 2 to 3 inch strips and glued them (with Goop) on each side of the ends of the rug and 1 or 2 pieces on each side of the rug.  They NEVER move, unless I pull them up.
