A battery monitor doesn't care about voltage (although it will display that if you wish), because it has a much better way of knowing how much power you have left: it  keeps a running total of every bit of power that goes into and out of your batteries.
The Link monitors do actually 'care' about the voltage, because they track this along with charge current and use its value to determine when the batteries are fully charged and an 'auto-synchronization' function can take place. This requires a three-stage charging process to work properly. We as users, on the other hand, may not be much interested in the actual voltage.
