Hidden structure help
Yahoo Message Number: 117717
Hi. We have a 2006 IB and were looking to hang a small wooden fixture to the left of the entry door frame and the window valence. To my shagrin we found sturdy metal behind the thin veneer wood wall so close as to prevent a screw from seating. Has anyone encountered this or knows what is behind this structure?
The other candidate position is between kitchen and barrel chair windows. I hesitate to puncture the wall because it doesn't seem hollow there either.

Any previous experience is greatly appreciated.

Get some SuperLock from Radio Shack. It's a super-duper Velcro kind of stuff. It holds like steel and removes with a heat gun (hair dryer).
No maring the walls. I use it in several places.

Lydia,
The metal reinforcement is probably a gusset used add rigidity to the steel reinforcements in the frame.
There are fasteners available that use epoxy to glue either a stud or a nut to a surface so you wouldn't need to drill a hole in the steel reinforcement. Though you would likely have to make the pilot hole you already drilled a little bigger.
Another way is to drill a hole in the steel. Depending on the fixture you are mounting, and assuming you have already drilled a small hole through the veneer to hit the metal, you might try mounting it with a self-drilling screw. e.g. http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Steel-Sheet-Self-Drilling-Length/dp/B000NHTN2G/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1287892264&sr=8-13
or similar. Advantage, unlike drilling a hole and then using a self-tapping screw, there's no, or almost no, risk of drilling through the metal and on through the outside skin. The example above is for 1" inch length but many other lengths and sizes available as well as Phillips drive instead of hex head if that's what you prefer. Available also at many hardware stores or Fastenal etc.

Thank you both for the assistance.  Tapped the metal portion which was thick enough to take a 4-40 thread. Have to say this is the first coach we have had that allowed for such robust mounting method!  WTG LazyDaze...
