Black water valve October 12, 2010, 05:38:58 pm Yahoo Message Number: 117490My black water relief valve is leaking around the lower attaching thru-bolt (A very slight drip). It was a little loose so I tightened it. It still drips a little bit. I went down to our local RV store and they had only the blade type valves (My '91 RB has a turning knob type). He told me they didn't make the knob type any longer. First, I was wondering if I can fix the old one with a seal or whatever. Second, does anyone know if I can get the screw knob type anymore? Or, should I just buy the new blade type one? Dale from Downey.

First, I assume you're talking about the black tank dump valve, since that tank has no relief valve. I'm guessing there's a chance you could fix it by disassembling it, cleaning it, and replacing the gasket. But of course you'll have to drain and thoroughly flush the tank before you tackle that job. Then you'll have to refill the tank to verify that your homebrew fix worked. And if it didn't, you'll have to drain the tank again and install a new valve. Given that a new valve is a $15 item, I'd just replace the old one rather than trying to repair it. To my way of thinking, it's worth fifteen bucks to avoid the risk of having to do a nasty job twice.Andy Baird http://www.andybaird.com/travels/

Does anyone else have such rotary valves? Perhaps a PO found the blade valve lever difficult and used a more comfortable replacement. Anyway, if the blade valves are a direct bolt-on replacement, then I agree with Andy to replace it.Steve

But there used to be one on the market where the blade was not actuated by the standard push/pull T handle, but by a big four-lobed knob. It was supposed to be easier for arthritic hands. The actual valve was the same, though: a blade. I assume this is what Dale's talking about. And yes, it would have been a modification by a previous owner.Andy Baird http://www.andybaird.com/travels/

If this is the case, and the valve is similar to a conventional slide valve in the components that are leaking, it might be worth swapping the parts from a new slide valve to solve the leak issue with the old valve.Steve
