various rig sizes and installations

One of my major stumbling blocks with information from all of us, is that what will work, placement and size wise, is so different rig to rig...having a 30ft. IB, I get pretty confused when reading what people have put where, and what modifications you've done...grin...I get excited reading something, only to realize...I don't HAVE an under dinette area...
On the discussion on EMS surge protectors, in an IB anyway, there is a perfect, accessible placement under the sink cabinet, with the remote readout mounted between the bottom drawer and the under-stove compartment. It is behind the heater shielding, next to the incoming gennie line and right behind the converter...he left the 8 gauge wiring a little longer than needed so the unit could be pulled out into the open if  needed.

My mobile RV guy also DID NOT want to do a permanent mount as well--for the same reasons---if it fails you have to manually take it out and get it repaired. Where he ended up mounting it makes it -[as far as getting to it]--an easy proposition. This unit has easy-to remove fixable boards...don't know about the other parts.
It does protect any incoming power source--gennie, shore...he charged a house call and one hr....$120...to install it, which I felt was well worth it.

And, now, if for some reason I want it NOT on, I can just flip the remote switch to off...and it's out of the loop. Don't know what will happen if I toast a circuit or ? if that will still work...in my case, hopefully, I can just use my solar for power til I get it repaired.

One problem with bypass switches is that they are low-voltage devices that may circumvent the protections in the surge protector. Lightning strikes involve millions of volts, and an ordinary 'open' switch can appear like a perfect plasma conductor. A better solution would be a way to physically 'unplug' the wired-in unit and replug-in the line without it - which is of course what a portable unit will do too.
