I've been catching up on reading posts, and Tessa's terrifying experience sure sounds to me like a classic example of the old "swoop and squat" scam. Googling (or "Binging") the term will bring up plenty of information.

I took Joan's advice and Googled "swoop and squat" and did indeed find that Tessa's description of her experience fit these scams to a tee. Very scary! We all need to be on the lookout for potentially being set up for one of these. Here was just one post:
"Here is what the Swoop And Squat car accident scam is, and how you can avoid it.
This staged car accident is usually orchestrated via cell phone with one to four cars involved.
What they are looking for is an obviously well insured vehicle. That means an expensive late model car or commercial vehicle.
This staged accident, in its simplest form, happens when a car will cut (swoop) in front of you on purpose and then slam (squat) on their breaks causing you to rear end them.
Insurance companies usually consider it to be your fault when you rear end someone because that normally means that you were following too closely...and that is what makes this scam work.
More elaborate variations of this car scam take place with a couple other cars staged on each side of you to box you in so you can't veer out of the way of this staged car accident.
The car you hit will usually be full of passengers claiming all kinds of fraudulent back and neck injuries to your insurance company...."

Wow, I've been so naive. Now I'm on to these scams.

The only thing I wondered about was:

I'm not sure Ciao qualifies for that!  But maybe she looks a little better than Andy's April Fool pic on the homepage...
:)
Thanks for the great info.  I will be on the lookout and the next time some fool attempts this, I will definitely report it to the police!

Tessa,
I've ordered a dashboard cam from Brickhouse Security (it should be arriving today) and will have it in place when we depart east on our trip.

David still in Long Beach... patiently waiting to take delivery.
