who's replaced their carpet?
Yahoo Message Number: 111347
Because of the extensive water damage from the roof leaking for so long, i am going to pull up at least the front rm. carpet. ..[not the cab area] and, if affordable, the carpet around the Island bed as well.

I am looking at various flooring options and wanted to know what others have ended up using, and how happy are you with the finished product...durability, ease of maintenance, costs per sq. ft. I am shying away from heavier options like hardwoods as the IB has the lowest CC of all the models.

I'm not adverse to laminates, or vinyl or linoleum.....just want something that will be easy to live with and will hold up to full time use/traffic.

I really dislike carpet, and this light blue gray is impossible to keep clean anyway, so the water problem is kind of an excuse to do what i wanted to do anyway...grin. Tim Pease is going to do the work, after I hit Nagco to replace the cracked window in a week or so.

Off to research!

Gini: Last year we pulled up that stinky blue carpet everywhere but the cab area in our 24' MB and put down a very thin underlayment of plywood. On top of that we put down 12" squares of vinyl we got at Home Depot for very little $$$. We are delighted with the result: easy, easy care, looks attractive, is cool on your bare tootsies in the summer and nice when throw rugs protect those tootsies in the winter. We absolutely think this is the best thing we've done to our rig.

The carpet in our '84 RD was so-o bad that we took it out on the second day of the drive home.
There was some tile under the carpet and I put peel-and-press squares down to cover the rest of the plywood.
We hunted through laminates until we found a color that seemed to match. (Lowes, cheap!) The results are pictured in 20 seconds on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Njmzr1qUHE   ("LD Tour" if the URL doesn't work) We haven't felt the need for throw rugs, and the area is so small that care hasn't been a consideration. (I get down on my hands and knees and she hands me wet paper towels until she gets tired)
One caveat on the laminates: Ask your installer to run the pieces cross-ways. There is more waste, and it is more trouble, but every piece gets locked down on at least one end.

I recently replaced the carpet in our LD MB a few months ago with laminate flooring except the bedroom/rear room area and driver/passenger section. We love it! But...a few insights.
1) The easiest and least expensive would be to lay plywood over the subfloor (after the carpet was taken up).
2) Then, apply Vinyl strips. Much less time consuming and costly (imho).
3) Allure is a strong possibility but is very temperature dependent, at least for initial installation. I really wanted to go with Allure (Home Depot) and it also requires the plywood undersurface in the LD due to the bolt heads. Unfortunately, the temps ranged from 7 to 50 degrees here in Oregon this winter (Eugene). Home Depot strongly suggests an installation temperature of at least 60 degrees. (A good warm spring or early summer project). So I didn't want to take the chance the strips may curl up at a later time.
4) Not having the best tools and experience, the laminate project took much longer than expected (molding especially).

The nice thing about these "do-it-yourself" projects is that it really gives one a sense and pride of ownership plus the feeling of "home" for us fulltimers. Now I am ready to redo the clothes closet, add a table to the rear like that present in a TK to make a second computer area (one for wife and myself), and install cabinets for the overcab area. Never thought I would consider such projects a year ago.

Good luck in your project. Give us your feedback at some point!
