Nevada March 23, 2010, 11:13:15 am Yahoo Message Number: 111209This summer we plan on taking a trip to the North West and return through Nevada on US 50 (The Loneliest Road in America). Has anyone been on this road? Are there any sites worth stopping for? Is there anyplace near ELY to boon dock right off the highway?Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Jim Wells (30 ' IB) Scooby Doo & the Mystery Machine[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Lot's of places to stop and explore as well. See also http://www.takemytrip.com/09loneliest/08n_29a.htm#hickison, and http://www.legendsofamerica.com/NV-Quirky3.html (you can drive a 26' Lazy Daze all the way up the windy dirt road to the castle - - just take it slow). There's also some interesting grave yards just west of Austin as I recall, and much more.Enjoy!bumper Yonder Minden, NV[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

There are all kinds of places to boondock along this road...here are some of the places we've stayed, not all of them strictly boondocking:Carson City Nugget Casino, Carson City Dayton State Park, Dayton Churchill County Fairgrounds, Fallon Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, near Gabbs Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area, near Austin Illipah Reservoir Recreation Area, near Ely Great Basin National Park, BakerLinda Hylton http://map.datastormusers.com/user1.cfm?user=1167 http://earl-linda.blogspot.com

Outside of Carson City there are only three towns (?) along the entire route, Fallon, Austin, and Ely. There are scattered pull-outs so isolated that if you spent the night no one would be the wiser. One stop that I've used is an abandoned Whore House just a little east of east of Fallon. I'd always wanted to be able to say that I'd overnighted in one of those. Of course it was only in the parking lot. I can't be sure but I think it was called the Kit Cat Club (?). Further along there are historic stage stops (that's the route of the famous "Pony Express") that have pull-outs. All in all it's an enjoyable drive, expecially if you want to be alone.Steve S. Well, there is also Dayton, Silver Springs, Fernley (OK, it's actually on ALT US-50, but it's one of the places where you can get your "I've driven The Loneliest Road" book stamped), and Eureka. Frankly, IMO, if you want to drive the "loneliest road," drive NV-375, the Extraterrestrial Highway, through Rachel...this road makes US-50 look like a busy Interstate highway!!!Linda Hylton http://map.datastormusers.com/user1.cfm?user=1167 http://earl-linda.blogspot.com

Shame on youJoe Hamm Dear Joe Well, you are correct on one point, it was Salt Wells where I stayed. Mores the pity that it burned down. However, it was 2007 and not 2004. I know because I took delivery of my 2004 30'IB in October of '04. I even took pictures of the place although I can't find them now. If memory serves it must have been in Sept. 2006 while I was on my way to the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque and I camped in the east parking lot next to the chain link fence. If you Google 'Salt Wells' you'll find the correct date.Steve S. Lazy Bones & Jiggs
Re: Nevada Reply #9 – March 23, 2010, 02:40:57 pm Yahoo Message Number: 111227Quite a bit of this has been covered, but I use US 50 as a cross country road from west to east quite often. Prefer it to the interstates. At Fallon there is camping at Lahontan Dam, and the Nugget Casino has RV parking. The Nuggget features a $1.99 breakfast. There is also a very good Bosque restaurant in the Overland Hotel and Saloon. The interior of the building is a trip in it's own right. Across the street is a private car museum run by a local eccentric. You can see beautifully restored cars through the dusty window of what was once a car agency. West of Fallon is the Grimes Petroglyph site. Not as large as Hickson, but these are some of the oldest carvings around. There is also a longer overlook trail and a cave site there. No official camping, but if you park near the cave nobody bothers you. Linda and Bumper have covered most of everything, but I don't know if anyone mentioned Bob Scott in the NF west of Austin. Enjoy the ride. Beverly 07 23 1/2 TK
Nevada Reply #10 – March 23, 2010, 06:55:24 pm Yahoo Message Number: 111232I did 50 2 weeks ago. Near Ely, Ted H's data base identifies a campground, a few miles off the highway to the south. I was tired and opted instead for the KOA just east of Ely. It was acceptable as a place to spend the night, that's about it. I was on it for 2 days and had 2 days of snow.Fallon AFB is located a short ways east of Reno. If you are eastbound, 25 miles further to the east is a dry lake. Midway along the lake, about 1 1/2 miles east of 839 is a pulloff area on the right. I parked there and had lunch, while FA-18's were doing gunnery practice a few miles to the south of me. I enjoyed watching them set themselves up, go into a dive, then pull up. Several seconds later, I would hear this huge tearing sound from the gun. There was almost no other traffic on the road. IN the opposing direction I would see perhaps 3 or 4 vehicles in an hour at times. Some of the scenery was really nice, while a lot of the road was really flat and monotonous. All in all, I was glad I took it but would probably not repeat it.Ken F. in OR

Not to mention the Mormon Crickets that were migrating the last time I drove that route (on my way to the Golden Caravan in Cheyenne). They were so thick on the roadway that the squashed bodies actually made the road surface slippery. But they sure do sound like breakfast cereal, snap, crackle, pop!Steve S. Lazy Bones & Jiggs

Has anyone been on this road? I really like this road. We've gone a couple time a year lately. Maybe a little earth science would be interesting. What I think happened is that the ground between Salt Lake and Reno has gotten stretched by about 600 miles since the rocks were laid down as sediment. The ground broke in a half-dozen (maybe more) cracks, and the jagged edges are what you drive over. Each one is about 1200 feet high. There are few prettier views than from the top of a crest overlooking Basin and Range.John
