Shelves against shower wall March 10, 2010, 09:22:52 am Yahoo Message Number: 110917Hi, guys. We have an RK. The wall of the shower, on the outside is in the kitchen/dinette area. I would like to build a small shelving unit and attach it to that wall. However I am concerned about how to attach it, since I don't know what is behind it. Well, I know the shower is on the other side, but not sure if there is space in between, two by fours, etc, and don't want to drill holes unless I know what I am drilling into, which I don't. So, I am looking for ideas of how to attach this to the wall. Any suggestions?Thanks in advance.Lee

There's about an inch and a half gap between the walls, so if you use short screws (I prefer 1/2" #6 wood screws), there's no chance of penetrating the shower wall on the other side. Just glancing at that wall in my rig, I can see at least nine screws going into it, holding up various items in my office. No problems. :-)Andy Baird http://www.andybaird.com/travels/

Then apply silicone beads of silicone caulk to the remainder (majority) of the mounting surface. The double sticky is only there to hold the shelf in position while the silicone dries. Also, use the silicone sparingly if the shelf meets the wall snugly - - don't want silicone oozing out all over. This method is really only suitable for surfaces such as the shower wall, where if you ever decide the shelf must come off, it will be possible to remove the silicone from the non-porous surface - - doable with a bit of elbow grease and probably easier than patching holes, btw.bumperYonder[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Heavy-duty double-sided tape will hold a lot of weight and usually works well for about two years or so before the tape fails, usually during very hot or cold weather. I even wonder if silicone will fail after a few years. Nothing seems to permanently stick to the plastic coated paneling, even Super-Lock fails. For many wall-mounted things, I will first stick them up with double-sided tape or 3M blue masking tape. After I'm sure that the location is perfect, then I use the same short screw method Andy and bumper mentioned to finalize the install.Larry

The paneling's plastic protective coating seems to reject adhesive tapes. I have not found any adhesive tape that will stick for more than a few years.Larry
