Sherry, to the best of my knowledge the Onan MicroQuiet 4000 is the quietest generator of its type (built-in 4,000W) on the market. It isn't silent, and the noise does bother some people, but there is no quieter alternative that can deliver this much power (and yes, you need this much power).
As for fuel usage, the MQ 4000 uses about 1/3 to 1/2 gallon per hour, which is quite modest. I don't know of any 4,000W generator that uses less.

Bottom line: this is as good as it gets with today's technology.

--- The "MicroQuiet 4000" is now badged as the "QG 4000" (QG = "Quiet Gasoline"); this link to its spec sheet shows the gasoline consumption per hour of use at no/half/full load levels -- the information is near the bottom of the sheet:
 http://www.cumminsonan.com/www/html/Common/pdf/specsheets/a-1421.pdf

The MicroQuiet/QG/whatever is a built-in gas generator; the nature of this beast is that, even "tuned" to factory specs, it produces noise and exhaust stink. I exercise my generator when a breeze is blowing and the nest-door neighbors aren't home! If I'm parked or camped next to or even fairly near another RV, I don't fire it up unless I have a "must-use" situation, e.g., powering my air compressor, and then I minimize the run time as much as possible. I think that gasoline consuption would only become a problem if the generator were run for hours on end; as one can see from the chart on the spec sheet, the gasoline use is "minimal", even at full load.
Do they stink? Yes. Are they loud and occasionally obnoxious? Yes. However, I might attribute the same characteristics to a few people I know, but, like the generator, they can be useful and I'm usually glad to have them around.  YMMV.

Thank you Andy, Will be Leaving to go to LD tomorrow if the weather in Idaho and Nevada lets up.  Maybe they will start one up for me to listen to.  I have heard generators before but not ones that claimed quiet....and know that they must make some noise.

Don't forget that Honda makes an RV genset.  It is slightly quieter (IIRC) but it does weigh a little more.  It also has different mounting dimensions, so it's not a direct replacement.  But it is close enough that it should fit in a LD without too much trouble.

Just something else to consider.
Oh, and when it comes to portables, don't overlook the Yamaha models.

As I walk thru the campsite here I am almost embarrassed to run my 2001 Onan Micro quiet 4000. It seems to so much louder than any other genset running in the campground.  Others seem to be almost purring compared to ours.  Can this be corrected. Change muffler etc.

TIA Ed

Ed,
I believe your 2001 LD has the Onan Emerald genset. That's a two cylinder of older design than the Microquiet, which I believe was introduced in the 2003 LD. My sense is that the Emerald was noisier by nature.

Terry's correct: the older Emerald generator used in older Lazy Dazes such as your 2001 was MUCH noisier than the MicroQuiet introduced in mid-2002.

Arrrrgghhhh !!  :-(      In Quartzsite seeking solar.

Try Discount Solar on the northeast corner of Main Street and Plymouth.  If they've already closed down for the season, try RV Lifestyles, west of Love's.

Stay away from Solar Bill.
