Garmin nuvi question, map updates, and west coast get-to-gether February 24, 2010, 09:13:45 am Yahoo Message Number: 110378I bought a Nuvi 855 a couple of months ago and am now getting ready for a BIG trip back to the Mother ship for some renovation on the MB...Since I'll be leaving in about a week I thought I'd check for updates at the Garmin site. I found free updates of software and firmware...then I checked for maps...hmmm $69.00 for a one time map update. Are there no free updates, even for the initial first purchase of a Nuvi? Also, could someone email me about the Lake C get-to-gether? I'm thinking I might be in the neighborhood and would like to attend. Thanks much! Can't find anything about it on Garmin's site, but Amazon and others (google Garmin update maps lifetime) and you will get some hits. Was it me, before I paid $60 for one time, I would pay $90 for lifetime. YMMVLee

The fine print is on http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/us/maps/numaps-lifetime The lower price is http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-n%c3%bcMaps-Lifetime-America-Updates/dp/B001PKTFM8New question: I would like to swap our Nuvi between the LD and the toad. The cable and cradle, plus shipping are over $70 from Amazon. Not that much more for a second GPS. But, I would have to keep the maps upgraded in two units.Anyone know a lower cost way???Don[Non-text portions of this message have been removed] As an Amazon Associate Lazy Daze Owners' Group earns from qualifying purchases.
Re: Garmin map updates Reply #7 – February 24, 2010, 12:44:10 pm Yahoo Message Number: 110399Search Amazon or Ebay, I bought a second set of mounts and cables for a lot less. I prefer to use one Nav, so I only have to save new addresses once. Even though I back them up, it is still easier.Ken Sannwannabe in SoCal
Re: Garmin map updates Reply #8 – February 24, 2010, 12:59:47 pm Yahoo Message Number: 110400Here's the catch with the "Lifetime" Garmin update plan: It's not for your life, it's for the life of your Nüvi. "A nüMaps Lifetime subscription entitles you to receive up to four (4) map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on Garmin's website, for one (1) compatible Garmin product until your product's useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter. Your nüMaps Lifetime subscription may not be transferred to another person or another Garmin product." So if five years down the road, you replace your Nüvi 855 with a Nüvi Telepathic model that knows where you want to go before you even open your mouth, you're back to square one. That doesn't mean the "Lifetime" deal isn't a good one. Since "Onetime" updates are $70 a year, if you keep your Nüvi for more than one year, the $95 "Lifetime" deal is cost-effective. Here's a link:http://tinyurl.com/y9gqeya> Just be aware that it's not transferrable to another GPS in the future.Andy Baird http://www.andybaird.com/travels/

Unplug the Nuvi, disconnect the mount from the dash and take the whole thing, cable and mount, to your other vehicle. You could buy a new cable and mount but why? Check Garmin's Nuvi site for accessories. With three glue-on plastic bases, I can transfer both our SP-2730 and Nuvi 1491 to any of our three vehicles in just a couple of minutes. BTW, the Nuvi 1491 has turned out to be a very nice GPS, superior to the Street Pilot in almost every way. I especially like the big, bright screen and the lane control feature, nice for dealing with unfamiliar freeway interchanges.Larry

It sits on the dash of the LD with very little movement and transfers directly to the dash of our Wrangler where it performs the same way. Love the sandbag mount - can use our system in rental cars, friends' cars, on our boat, wherever. Works great.Carol and Linda '91 MB Priscilla

Re: Garmin map updates Reply #13 – February 24, 2010, 04:53:22 pm Yahoo Message Number: 110412The Nuvi has a cradle that functions to hold it on the dash and to keep it charged. Of course, I could switch the whole GPS, cradle and cord. However, I am such a clever fellow and dislike cord clutter on the dash so I ran the power cord through an access port that Ford has on the dash down to the fuse panel. That is makes it impractical for quick transfer. It will take at minimum an extra cable, but I would like two cables and two cradles. It looks like to get what I want will cost $70. And so it goes. Ed, a cradle like you describe would kinda work. The battery life on the 755 is short, less than two hours. Without the charging cradle, I might not be able to get back home.I will hold out my stimulus bucket and see if $70 drops in it.

I tried Tessa's trick of Velcro on the bottom of the sandbag base, but it kept peeling off. I wrapped a loop of double-sided Velcro around the base and found it stuck like a burr to the felt-like dash cover and held the GPS securely in place.Sharon N. Crossville, TN

With tax it ended up being about $100 and it's already shipped. It saved me $20 over the Garmin price and since I expect to keep that Nuvi for at least a couple of years it should save me quite a bit.Bonnie JacobsWho will soon be heading west over routes I-20 and I-10 and hoping to see other LD's[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
