On the subject of Mexican food...

Waaaay back in NJ, of all places, is a restaurant named Jose Tejas.
They have the best Tex-Mex food I have ever had.  I have been trying restaurants all over AZ, NM and OR without finding anything I liked as much.  It seems the rice is always bland and spice=hot (which I don't mind) rather than spice=flavor.
If anyone has ever been to Jose Tejas and can steer me to someplace in the western states that compares well please, PLEASE, let me know.  If you don't want to flood the group, please feel free to send direct to me.

Thanks Ken F in OR

Wish I'd had this info last time I was there. I got suckered into eating at Cafe Pasqual's, 121 Don Gaspar by the program Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on the info that they had good Corned Beef Hash. There's very little private seating and so I got sandwiched into the Hilton Hotel crowd. I would have much rather have spent an hour in a cold storage locker among the sides of beef, it was that much fun. And the hash was straight out of a Hormel can.
Yes, I've noticed the crowds at Tomasita's also. Next time (this October) I'll try some of the ones you mentioned.

Have you ever eaten at Michael's Kitchen in Taos???

Steve, when you come back through Santa Fe, let me know and we'll take you to one of our "hole in the wall" favorites. We've introduced Chris Horst and (separately) Nancy McKenna to Los Potrillos (the one in the old Pizza Hut). Unless we're on the road, we eat there at least once a week. The food is "Zacatecas family style" and the quality is consistently superb.
I forgot to mention another great spot. it's called "Coyote Cantina" (on Water St.), and it's on the roof of the hugely expensive Coyote Cafe. For a fraction of the cost of dining in the Cafe, at the Cantina you can sit on the roof, enjoy looking out over the city, and experience some of the same great flavors as in the much-ballyhooed Cafe below. It's not the cheapest restaurant in Santa Fe, but one of the most fun and with delicious, intriguing food.
Like you, I don't care for Cafe Pasqual's... yet it's in every tourist guidebook and is always packed. You NEVER get a table all to yourself. You're always sandwiched in with others. I haven't had the hash there, but it doesn't surprise me that it wasn't up to your expectations.
Tomasita's used to be quite good, but now it's coasting on its reputation. The owners are part of a family that owns half a dozen really good restaurants in town, so they do know how to run a restaurant. But the crowds have just smashed the quality out of it.
We've not been to Michael's Kitchen. When we go to Taos, we tend to eat at Appletree (in summer... eat in their patio!). A bit pricier is Jacob's Table, in La Fonda right on the Plaza. Food is good there too.

I' m getting hungry just talking about all this!

Wow, how can I refuse. I need to do some genealogy research in both Albuquerque and Taos so Santa Fe will be a convienient stop over. I usually stay at the Trailer Ranch on Cerrillos Rd., an easy drive to downtown. Contact me off-board at lejest at outdrs.net
