converter noise question

Thanks for the replies...the gentleman who installed the new unit is coming out Tues. to "hear" for himself. I have told him about the toothpick fix [grin]...hey, anything that works!
Since I just had this installed, I hate to pay for another unit right off. He is going to check out the install space as the other two units recommended won't fit into where the old setup is. I am also getting the progressive dynamics surge protector hardwired in, and it has to go into the same space as a possible other unit would go.
He also said he has had some really bad customer service experiences lately w/Xantrex units...he is solidly a progressive dynamics man.

I am hesitant to replace the new unit, as there is already a fair amt. of $$ outlaid for other upgrades, repairs, etc. I may have to live with this if the verdict is this is what these units sound like...ie., it's not a defective unit.
The fan sounds normal when it runs....this buzz precedes the furnace coming on...it grows in intensity and volume until the blower kicks in....afterwards, the unit's fan comes on, sometimes w/the buzz in the back ground. But it is loudest when the fan ISN'T running.

I'll let all know what the installer says when he comes.

Andy, to have the either of the other two installed would mean a fairly intensive re-fit, wiring, etc. Not a drop in/connect like the replacement model. At the time, I was desperate...and he had it in stock. Seems it is a really common unit.

again thanks all.

Gini I was curious as to what model converter you originally had. I had the 35 amp magnatec and looked online and found the PD replacement that slid right in. I am not all that experienced with electronics, etc but I installed this myself and works great. Are you saying that PD did not have a replacement model for your rig? John 85 fl

While there is not a real good place to put the surge protector; it does NOT have to go where the converter goes.
Ours is mounted on the kitchen/bath wall below the sink. Hard to get to, but you should not have to get to it after the install.

The PD fits where the old converter was. It's designed to do so.
Many people have installed them in LD's and SOB's.
There are even install instructions and pictures in Files section of this forum and all over the web.

I seem to have lost the part of this thread where you named the unit you just had installed.
I've recently had the Progressive Dynamics PD4645 installed in my '04 30'IB. It was a drop-in same size fit and included a new fuse panel. I have not heard the fan in my unit run since installation (nearly a year ago).

It was so quiet that I decided to buy the identical fan (on line,
