And that reminds me....Cachuma is the source of drinking water for Santa Barbara County residents. Kayaking, canoeing, water skiing, swimming, and any other body (or potential body) contact with Cachuma's waters is not allowed. Thought you'd like to know in case anyone is thinking of launching a small, tipsy craft! But it looks like "Wildlife Cruises" will be available again starting in March. This might be a fun excursion to undertake on Sunday, the day we're supposed to vacate the group campground. http://www.countyofsb.org/parks/parks05.aspx?id=7564Lorna Santa Cruz http://uppity-woman.blogspot.com/

Most local lakes now have severe restrictions pertaining to launching private boats in an effort to control the spread of the mussels.Larry

Re: Boating at Lake Cachuma Reply #4 – February 02, 2010, 08:37:58 pm Yahoo Message Number: 109693Thanks for posting the info about the Wildlife Cruises Lorna. I think Ron and I will do that! Any group interest to go on the same day? Sunday works for us, but so should any other available time. Are reservations advised? Mary Tribbett Dixon, CA

Re: Boating at Lake Cachuma Reply #6 – February 03, 2010, 11:25:43 am Yahoo Message Number: 109699For those interested, the cruises are primarily 'bird' cruises with a wildlife expert. Nesting Bald Eagles are usually located, as well as Ospreys, many waterfowl, turkey vultures, etc. On occasion, four-footed critters may be spotted on shore, but we have never yet seen a bobcat or cougar from the boat. Other activities include biking the campground, hiking several nature trails and a longer trail to the dam. The REALLY fit with a portable gps and good trail map could hike to Santa Ynez peak on the other side of the highway. The other side of the lake is an off-limits wildlife reserve tho. Local trips would include Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley wineries.Steve
