AZ State Parks Closing?

Does anyone have any knowledge about Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction being on the "Close" list in Arizona? We were planing on a several day stay there on our return trip to Florida after picking up our new 27' RB in late March. We were really looking forward to being there again (stayed for a week in '98 while on our 6- month long honeymoon traveling in our Barth motorhome).
Thanks, Mike Coachman

Mike,
I've been watching this situation with a lot of interest. Looks like you'll have one more chance to enjoy Lost Dutchman in March.
Here's the scoop on closings from the AZ State Parks' website (http:// azstateparks.com/):

Parks will be closed in a phased sequence starting on February 22, 2010 and include Homolovi Ruins State Park in Winslow, Lyman Lake State Park in St. Johns and Riordan Mansion State Historic Park in Flagstaff.
The next park closings will occur on March 29, 2010 and will include Fort Verde State Historic Park in Camp Verde, Roper Lake State Park in Safford, Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park, Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park and Tubac Presidio State Historic Park.
The final phased closings will occur on June 3, 2010 and will include Tonto Natural Bridge State Park near Payson, Alamo Lake State Park in Wenden, Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction, Picacho Peak State Park and Red Rock State Park in Sedona.

What a shame! Those parks are in some of the most beautiful locations in that region. Thanks for the info. We will look forward to visiting there.

Mike,

The last that I read in the Arizona Republic was the that town of Apache Junction was going to try to take over the operation of Lost Dutchman.  I don't know if this will happen, but there is an effort to do so.  Spend a lot of money while you are in AZ so we have more sales tax to keep these parks open!!

Glen, We always try to spend a lot when visiting an area we enjoy. I never complain about public park/campground fees as the money goes to keeping them available. I rather dry camp in an open spaces public parks (federal, state, county, or city) any day than have full hookups in a private park where the RV's are lined up like dominoes. Probably 95% of our camping is dry style in public locations. This gives my wife a chance to do her landscape oil paintings and me to do photography. Many of the public parks are in the most beautiful scenic locations imaginal. Few resort hotels can rival places we have camped for scenery. However, I think I may be preaching to the choir here.
We plan on having Elizabeth's son and daughter fly into Phoenix and camp with us at Dutchman. Touring the Apache Trail and Tonto National Monument cliff dwellings are spectacular! If we are lucky, we might get a chance to see the desert in full bloom. There is a lot to see in the Phoenix area also. I have always enjoyed the zoo and the nearby Hall of Flame Firefighters Museum. There is a multitude of things to do in the area.
We can't wait to get started in the new LD.
