Water pump will not shut off January 19, 2010, 02:24:03 pm Yahoo Message Number: 109276Forgive me if this has been asked before. I searched the messages section but could not find a similar question. Yesterday I was out in my 1983RL22' and I turned on the water pump to wash my hands in the sink. Usually the water pump will run a second or two and then shut off as pressure builds up. Then, when I open the spigot it will run as needed and shut off after the spigot is closed. Before I turned on the spigot I realized that the water pump had continued running and did not shut off. I turned on the faucet and water indeed flowed out with normal pressure but when I turned it off, the pump kept running. I looked around but could see no where else that water was flowing. I'm a little scared that I could blow out my plumbing it the pressure switch has failed. The fresh water supply tank was about 1/4 full when this occurred.Has anyone had a similar experience? Thanks,David

It's sometimes hard to find things even if you know what you are looking for.QuoteBefore I turned on the spigot I realized that the water pump had continued running and did not shut off. Rather common. The pump MAY have a screw adjustment on the cover on the opposite end of the motor. Access to the screw will not be easy. You may have to unscrew the pump from the floor to get to it. You MAY be able to get the pump to turnoff, by tightening the screw in 1/8 inch turns, no more than one full turn.Quotelittle scared that I could blow out my plumbing it the pressure switch has failed. I would not worry about that, but do keep it off when not using it.QuoteHas anyone had a similar experience? Many have.If I were buying a new pump today it would be an Aqua Jet.Cheers, Don

Usually the water pump will run a second or two and then shut off as pressure builds up. Then, when I open the spigot it will run as needed and shut off after the spigot is closed. With this vintage, like ours, the most likely cause is a leak. If the pump just stays on, it would be a very large one. Easy first test: turn the pump switch on, then off. Wait 5 min, then open a faucet. If the water flows strongly for a second or so, then the problem is likely either the pump head needs service to raise the pressure, or the pressure switch is bad. If you have no flow or just a few drops, then a leak is pretty certain. If that is the case, then check all connectors. Eventually, ALL the plastic flare fittings will crack and must be replaced with brass ones. Another possibility is a cracked city water connection - look for water dripping underneath outside below the fitting.Steve

I found water leaking severely underneath the rig in that area. I pulled the city water connection and tightened the screws and it has stopped but I went ahead and purchased a new water connection and will be replacing it as soon as the weather will allow. What a mess... Plus all the mayor wiring in that area, not a good combination.Ellen[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

This was the problem I had last year when my pump keep recycling on and off.Larry

If so, that would be obvious visual clue.hmmm, last year I saw water slowly seeping out of the city water inlet. The pump was operating normally. A few weeks later the pump failed.Cheers, Don

I went with brass after being in Joshua Tree and the plastic plug fell apart. Glad I was there and not hiking when that happened otherwise all onboard water would of been pumped out! John 85fl. Of course, this would only be the case if the check valve were stuck open. The plug is only to keep the fitting clean, not to retain pressure.Steve

John 85fl..." Which is why I have a small laminated card hanging on my screen door that says "TURN OFF WATER PUMP". After I heard about one rig getting flooded at the Golden Caravan (was that you, Paul?) I decided there was no reason to leave the water pump on if I was not on board.Chris
